re: Anyone think that this wasn't Alleva's decision?

A few holes in that theory:
1) Why say "I am the search" unless you're just trying to be an alpha? Totally unnecessary line that sets you up for failure.
2) Why the huge buyout and overpaying for CEO when King and the governor and others keep harping on how we're broke?
Now I do think Eddy O made friends with the right people and did a great PR act, thereby putting a great deal of pressure on Alleva to hire him. But at the end of the day, Alleva was one of Miles's biggest critics behind the scenes and wanted him gone. It was up to him to line up a replacement and he couldn't so he went along with Ed's allies and hired him despite everyone with a functional brain predicting it would end badly.

Alleva has given no reason to indicate he deserves the benefit of the doubt.

quote:well, it looks bad for program stability if it is perceived that your new coach is already on the hot seat before his first game. If there was no buyout, and Ed could be canned at anytime with no financial damage to LSU, you don't think other schools would use that against LSU during the recruiting process?

Just playing devil's advocate here...

I'd rather be negatively recruited against than stuck with this shitty regime
if O wins then they can't use that no buyout against him, but if he's losing like he is well we're just stuck. There was quite literally no upside to giving him that buyout. Everyone associated with that contract should lose their job. Pathetic

It is obvious, hiring Ed Orgeron was the plan from day one. The AD never did a coaching search. The only reason any other coaches were even approached was because O lost to Florida. Now, whether that was Alleva's decision or not is debatable but he shouldn't go out there and proclaim "I am the search" if he is bound by what his masters tell him. If anything, I would be distancing myself form Coach O as much as possible. Regardless, a lot of house cleaning is required but the farther up the chain you go, who is going to make that decision? Likely, Alleva and O are the only firings that occur as a result of this debacle.

No, that statement doesn't say, 'I am narrowing down candidates', it says 'I am making the decision'. If that was not the case, he shouldn't have said it.

Agreed. Using that is as shitty and short-sighted as hiring O to keep continuity and the recruiting class together. It's a coaching change. shite will fall apart for a year but the right coach will get it righted quickly.
Chicken start throwing some of that TD money at TAF and lead the charge.

If he was being forced to make a hire he was vehemently against yet would've been held responsible for, he should've resigned. No school looking to hire him would've held that against him.

Meh, resigning a $750k job is easier said than done, especially when politics come into play with most AD jobs. Resigning could signal that he isn't willing to work with the politics that comes with the job.
Also, let's face it, people aren't knocking down his door to hire him, so he probably doesn't have much of a choice.

I can assure you that this was all Joe Alleva- check my post around the firing and hiring time
There were board members for and against the decision. F King gave JA full authority to hire which is how the board directed the process- all Joe.
JA have proven he does not have the skill set to hire and negotiate alone.
I will also tell you the security suite area in TS is not a happy place and you can guess who the center of discussion is.

Very unlikely JA hired EO on his own. His influence in the hire may be his downfall if things don't work out..don't know. I lot of people were convinced after the good finish last year and his stint at USC that he was a lot better coach. That along with the timing of the Tom Herman deal could have made those involve rush there decision also. How they allowed the ridiculous contract to get passed is a really good question. As far as recruiting if he's fired...it could all depend on who replaces him imo.

The public statements don't really mean much to me. It's probably just some BS that sounded good to him at the time.

Why the huge buy out
At first this completely baffled me. I even made at least one stupid statement on this forum along the lines of "what have we got to lose? He's cheap and if he doesn't work out we'll just get rid of him" ...Not knowing about the buyout at that moment. The recruiting thing must be it
My take is this...
In 2015 Alleva wanted to can Miles and was lining up Jimbo. The price tag got too high. LSU was having a budget crisis so Alleva was told not to go through with it because it wouldn't look good. University budgets and athletic spending should have not been connected so this tells me somebody else made the call. (King?)
2016 starts out rough. Someone decides enough is enough and something must be done now. (not King and probably not just Alleva because the money had to come from somewhere). They fire Miles...And THEN They try Jimbo and they try Herman. That doesn't work out so they fall back on Orgeron.
The fact that it's all so reactionary shows just how amateurish these people are. They fired Miles with no plan in place already. They did the same thing when Chavis quit. Called his bluff without having a new DC lined up. It was a terrible time to try to find one. Right around signing day. Had to have hurt recruiting.

I can assure you beyond the shadow of a doubt that the final decision to hire O was only JA, he was given the green light to make his own decision.
Sure there were board members and boosters in O's corner and there an equal number if not more that wanted someone else-- in the end it was Joe.

Truth- The money was there to replace CLM, JA was in over his head with Sexton and made a royal mess that was about to explode. A meeting was held at half time and the decision was to retain CLM due to the debacle of our AD

At the beginning of 2016 JA asked for total control of the process- he was given that, JA and JA alone canned CLM- the money was there in 2015

him and his 'I am the search'.
This was where he completely lost my support. I never really liked him as AD but I was willing to give him a chance. I still thought he did some good things for us.
But if this wasn't his decision I don't think he would have announced so arrogantly that "I am the search". He sealed his fate with that proclamation
