Are you deliberately conflating clinical criminal insanity with "mental illness"?
No. Read my other post for the distinction I ma making. The legal definition of insanity is another matter altogether. BTW, I currently work on a forensic unit.

I accept your credentials. I'm still missing your point.
I'm willing to admit it may be over my head. Although, what little I've had to delve into DSM classifications and their ever changing nature, tells me that such definitive type statements are not always so hard and fast.

This guy wasn't in prison, you know.
Yes, but his father was, and that is who this thread is about. I was responding to the post that suggested that the shooter has a genetic predisposition to mental illness based on the father's history.

Well, that clarifies it. I thought you were referring to the shooter.

Is there a DSM code for “psychopath with suicidal ideation”? Surely, there is.

I couldn't tell if that was some sort of odd misplaced joke or if he was being serious.

UT Tower shooter Charles Whitman had a brain tumor, you never know, a psycho that stopped taking his meds....anything

We don't know enough about the shooter yet, but I doubt a clear history of mental illness is discovered.

It's possible, but I doubt it. This shooting was much more calculated and planned in advance.

Yeah, probably not. I don't know that such necessarily means, or even leads to the reasonable conclusion, that he wasn't mentally ill, though.

IIRC, the Howard Johnson's sniper also was discharged from the military for being a psycho.

No. The closest thing would be Antisocial Personality Disorder. Although there is a code for that, it is not considered a mental illness by itself. Sometimes, it is a secondary diagnosis.
Suicidal ideation is not a mental illness either. Lots of people think of suicide at some point in their lives but don't act on it. Actual self mutilation or suicide attempts are entirely different and are highly correlated with Borderline Personality Disorder and Mood or Psychotic Disorders. Had this been the case with Bruce, a formal diagnosis would have been made (i.e. Major Depressive Disorder, Severe, Recurrent, Schizoaffective Disorder, Depressive Type, etc.).

I'm just basing this off of his apparent behavior leading up to the incident and the absence of any report of a significant psychiatric treatment history thus far. A person this guy's age would have a documented psychiatric history if he had a major mental illness.

Very sorry, but I'm sure you can see the huge difference between what was conveyed in this context.

His dad doesn't sound psychopathic though. Just sounds like the typical live larger than life type who gives 0 fricks.

We don't know if this shooter was crazy, but given his father's history and now this, sociopathy/antisocial personality does run in families.
