Can that kind of thing get you in trouble in the military?

Umm yep
Not bc its communist but for any politician.
Although communism goes against everything he stood for when he took his oath when enlisting and after earning his commission or the constitution for that matter

In todays environment it is doubtful. The military use to have standards.

IIRC political views are accepted of enlisted, not of the officer corps.

Uh, yeah. I don't want to sound like a barracks lawyer but they got him on Article 133: Conduct Unbecoming of an Officer and Article 134 which is pretty much a catch all under the UCMJ.
I'm honestly shocked. It's been a long time since I filled out an SF-86 for a security clearance and I had to do it twice. Once when I enlisted as my MOS required a Secret and when I when to Fort Bragg as I required a TS for that duty station. I could have sworn it asked if I had any affiliation to any communist party or if I had family with any affiliation. I would think an Infantry officer would require at least a Secret. Do they not ask that anymore?
