Not surprised this went under the radar this past week bc this board seldomly follows actual politics. John bel Edwards adminstration was actually able to repair the state budget to produce a 100 million dollar surplus WITHOUT cutting tops funding. Something Jindal could not do in 8 years.
Jindal fincially fricked over our state big time and JBE is cleaning up the mess 18 months in!
If you really wanna know how the budget deficit got to where it is now . Read here LINK
Is has to do with the Stelly plan, from the Mike foster adminstration which taxed the rich and Blanco rolled back bc the oil and gas boom during her term. Jindal's dumbass repealled it completly his first year in office with no plans to make up for the loss of funds, and Louisiana couldnt pay its bills as a result of the repeal. Bc Jindal didn't want to raise taxes and wasn't creative in fixing the budget, his solution was the gut the flagship university of the state.
Anyway, everythings under control know that we have JBE in office but carry on your debates about the NFL while adults address the real concerns for this state.
Stelly plan- Named for former Lake Charles lawmaker Vic Stelly, the plan put income taxes on mostly moderate-to-wealthy people and did away with a sales tax on food and utilities that disproportionately affected poor people. It was passed and supported by Republican Gov. Mike Foster, but it became a target for conservative talk radio by 2007, when lawmakers and Blanco passed the first portion of the repeal.

It was SUSPENDed for a short time but it has been restored. It was JBE first year in office and he inherited Jindal's fincial disaster

so, about 10% of the budget gap for FY 18?

This is pretty amazing if true.

Cool. So now we can lower the absurdly high sales tax. I'm just kidding. I know a Democrat will never lower taxes.

Yeah, that's how paying off debt works, you make it up alittle at a time. Remember we're dealing with 8 years of Jindal's mess. JBE was only elected January of 2016. A simple thank you to JBE will do

And yet, he still will not be reelected.

Awesome. It'll be smooth sailing and more gloom and doom for the next budget year if the legislature can keep costs n check.

Wasn't the budget passed despite JBE? I remember JBE bitching about a ton of cuts that were made but specifically spending cuts to Medicare or Medicaid because we would lose out on the federal Match.
If I remember correctly he also bitched because they refused to allocate 100% of the projected funds and instead budgeted for 97% of the projections because we've been consistently short of the projections the past few years.

Ya know, frick a guy like you.
You are celebrating the fact that these assholes have taken enough money from the people of Louisiana that bust their arse every day to make this state solvent again.
They piss away every cent that falls into their hands and always want more.
Nothing to be celebrated.

Cheering for a government budget surplus is like congratulating a thief for having a lot of money in the bank.
