Mikey Garcia says he'll go up to 154 to face Cotto in December

There's no way Mikey can gain 20# of usable weight in three months. He would get pummeled by Cotto at that weight.

Mikey Garcia (37-0, 30 KOs) has made some noise on social media regarding his interest in facing WBO junior middleweight titlist, Miguel Cotto. Cotto had been hoping to face the winner of last week's middleweight bout between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez. Because that bout went to a draw, they are more interested in a rematch - possibly in May of 2018 - which rules both out for Cotto this year. Garcia has been calling for bouts with several fighters, like Jorge Linares and Vasyl Lomachenko, but they are both scheduled for upcoming title defenses. Linares defends this Saturday against Luke Campbell and probably won't be ready for a fight in December, while Lomachenko is facing Guillermo Rigondeaux in December.

I would love that fight," said Cotto's trainer, Freddie Roach, to BoxingScene.com. "I don't know what weight class he wants us to get down to, yet. But we'll see, we're definitely interested." Garcia, is currently the WBC 135-pound belt-holder, and on July 29th defeated Adrien Broner in a junior welterweight contest. But Roach says he insists that potential pairing takes place at 154-pounds.

Is he trying to be the next Pacquiao by jumping up so many weight classes in a short span of time? Mikey won't carry any sort of power to 154 and this fight makes no sense for him whatsoever except to get a nice payday.
Cotto would manhandle him at 154. He'd be better off trying to drain Cotto down to 147 but it would never happen since he's the B-side in Cotto's farewell fight.

Not realistic... Would overall really hurt Mikey's career. Would be so hard for him to put weight on and then put it off. Cotto would win anyways. I would love a GGG-Cotto fight in December in MSG though... Or even Cotto-Lemieux/Brook/Khan

Cotto is beyond washed up. It's an easy fight for Garcia.

Not at 154 my man...Mikey's biting off more than he can chew similar to when Kelly Pavlik thought he'd jump up and fight old man Hopkins and got battered.

That would be a very entertaining fight and I wouldn't be so quick to say Cotto would dominate the fight.

Should insist weigh in happens 20 minutes before wrap hands. Else those day before weigh ins let guys put on 10 lbs.

Possible publicity stunt and I am OK with it. Mikey isn't very well known by the general public - at least not as well known as he should be considering he is a pretty damn good fighter. And a lot of that falls on him because he has hardly fought in the last few years. So I am ok with him calling out Cotto even though the fight will likely never come close to actually happening because it at least gives him a little publicity buzz. Maybe more casual fans tune in to his next televised fight if its marketed as, not only the guy who just kicked Broner's arse, but also the guy who was calling out Cotto.
