Hayride: Benefit Of The Doubt 37, Ed Orgeron 7

A solid post by Scott McKay in the Hayride Sunday. He places the blame right at the feet of Alleva.
I agree completely with Scott here with all of his points which are my similar takes. I particularly like the third reason Scott brings up with the O Vs Wade hire. Great point. This is a good read.

NO. 1: THIS LOSS HAD THE FEEL OF REALITY, NOT A HICCUP
The result in Starkville, if you hadn’t seen the game, would likely appear as a one-off in a game where nothing went right against an inspired opponent better than people thought. And it might well be that’s what it was. Except LSU let Chattanooga’s backup running back rush for 85 yards the previous week, so the warning signs for what Mississippi State did to them were there.

NO. 2: ORGERON LOST THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT WITH THAT PERFORMANCE
That’s definitely where it sits with me, and I’m most certainly not alone. When Orgeron was hired, I wasn’t sparing in my criticism of LSU athletic director Joe Alleva – not so much because he hired Orgeron but because the process which produced the hire was hopelessly bush-league. Lots of people are going to be asking this week why Alleva didn’t talk to Dan Mullen, Mississippi State’s head coach, whom everybody knows is going to leave for the first bigger job he can get, before he threw up his hands and hired Orgeron. Right now that looks like it would have been a good move.
quote:
NO. 3: ALLEVA WAS A BIGGER LOSER THAN ORGERON TONIGHT You almost have to feel sorry for LSU’s athletic director, because before tonight the most recent developments with respect to his job performance involved the amazing job Will Wade has been doing as the new men’s basketball coach. Wade has shown all the hallmarks to date of a program-builder; he’s turned over the roster and brought in a host of talented players, he’s built an outstanding coaching staff and he’s generated a ton of excitement about the program’s future.
But at this point, hiring Wade actually might work against him. If Orgeron were to struggle to get bowl-eligible this year, let’s say, while Wade coaches a totally rebuilt team into the NIT or maybe even the NCAA in March, the results of the two search processes will be pretty stark; one coach hired through a national search and winning a competition with several other programs trying to land him succeeds above expectations, while the other hired through a process perceived to be less open and more political turns into a fizzle. You could survive that if the fizzle was in basketball rather than football – when it’s the other way around, everyone will ask why Alleva didn’t do his homework and get a Will Wade for football.

this is where i'm at. i gave the guy a shot, but that performance was eerily similar to his time at ole miss.

Scott is on point if last Saturday's performance continues. Let's hope from our standpoint it does not.

Damn, sounds just like what I said in Chicken's thread.
Some people miraculously are still giving him a chance. Don't know what they need to see, him run the program hopelessly into the ground before you admit he was a bad idea?

McKay is all over it.
This was a very bad loss. Not only was it a bad result, but when you factor in the complete lack of discipline, the fact that our mega high priced coordinators were thoroughly outcoached, the fact that the players essentially quit midway through the 2nd half, and the fact that it was against a roster full of players we didn't want..... Wow. These things are not the indicators of a well coached football team.
I was disappointed in the hire, but as a fan of Coach O, I was happy to extend that Benefit of the Doubt to him. It is now gone.
If we don't look significantly better than Florida on 10/7, I will be ready to pull the plug. But, Alleva will need to go at the same time. No way he gets to make another football hire.

This is a very good assessment of the situation. Orgeron doesn't have any goodwill left. If they don't look legitimately better against a mediocre Florida Gator team it's all over for him. He won't be able to turn it around in season and recruiting will continue to suffer. Out of all the idiotic things Alleva has done the buyout situation with Orgeron appears to be the dumbest of them all.

Merlin would have done well at LSU. He would have either developed our QB (as he's proven able to do) or he would have recruited one. He would have spread the field. We screwed up on this deal. IF State goes on to have the kind of season I expect, Merlin will be the next coach at Tennessee.

I've been posting some of those same comments about Alleva today in 104.5 The Huddle. All deleted.

This article made me go back and look at last season to see who O actually beat that was worth a crap.
Texas A & M and Arkansas were the only SEC teams with winning records. And Louisville in the bowl game. I hated the hire but was cautiously optimistic after he kept Aranda and got Canada. Now I don't know why I was.![](https://images.tigerdroppings.com/Images/Icons/IconSad.gif)
