The real elephant in the room is the state of college football and how it is dealt with. First, let me state that I am over 50, which makes me more of a traditionalist. For example, when I see one of our DBs pull out the Dikembe Mutombo after making a routine play, down 30 points, I cringe. I also prefer to use the word “thuggery” instead of the millennial “swagger”. Arden Key mixing it up before the game is not a good look for LSU or college football. College football is merely a microcosm of our society, which promotes social promotion over responsibility, participation trophies over competition, and safe spaces over free speech. What this creates in college football are entitled and coddled kids, and let’s face it, very few mensa candidates.

Now let’s discuss the other elephant, Nick Saban, and why he is the most successful coach in college football. He has figured out the 2 most important aspects of coaching today’s football athlete. First, these kids needs a parent who parents, not a parent as a friend. Through responsibility and accountability (some may say fear), Saban lets his players know exactly what is expected. Second, Saban has also understood how to deal with the “lower than average IQ” player of today. Saban doesn’t go to complicated defensive schemes or multiple shifts to confuse defenses. His main recruiting emphasis is the trenches, for if you dominate up front, there is no need for complexity to win. LSU boasts having the most players on NFL rosters, but what percentage of them are skilled players? I’m sure if you compared the number of lineman in the league, you would probably find a different picture.

So where does this leave Coach O? Simple – 1) 100% focus on recruiting the “big uglies”, period. We will always get our share of the skilled guys, 2) Stop acting like these boys’ friend and prepare them to be men.

Yea, I bet you never played a down of college football. You're kind of a condescending a-hole here.

You have skewed view about the intelligence of football players. There is a lot more going on schematically at Alabama than just lining up. To hear you talk about players this way is a bad reflection on you.

Why do you think we have lost 5 o-lineman since January? Coach O is making them go to class and be accountable. Coach O is a disciplinarian in his own right. Post is straight garbage.

Trenches. Period.

We got away from recruiting big uglies several years back and it finally began catching up with us around 2013 against Alabama and then weaker and weaker teams like Arky '14&15, Miss State '17 ever since.

There is a lot to be said about your post, but mainly, I think you are over simplifying Saban's defensive schemes. The offense may look straightforward, but the defense is anything but. There is a lot going on there other than lining up and tackling the ball carrier.

While there are a chunk of players at major D1 schools who aren't classroom smart, I'd venture most are football smart and can keep up with a thick play book if given some time.

Dude I said the EXACT same thing. I was livid when I saw that.
