That has to be one of the dumbest statements someone can make, and I just had my oldest friend, who opted to stay in Miami and is evacuating to West fricking Palm Beach, tell me that.

The frick?

No one who has "dealt" with a hurricane would ever utter those words again, much less with this fricking monster barreling down on them.

She honestly thinks it's just going to be some wind and rain. She'll be fine.

She could have evacuated any time this week and come home to Alabama, but her own hubris has put her in the path of a killer and there's nothing I can do to help.

frick. I'm terrified for her. I've been through hurricanes. Even a Cat 2 will make you fill your drawers. I can't imagine the destruction this thing will wreak.

Second dumbest comment is, our architects know how to build for hurricanes...

Not this one.

I feel for anyone that has to stand on the sidelines while their loved ones are in the direct path of this bitch from hell.

Some people just won't listen to reason.

frick!

My GF's sister and her fiancé refuse to leave Key West.

That is simply retarded.

When he's stuck there for several days without power/water and without the ability to go anywhere, he'll understand

Some people just have no clue how flooding and storm surge work beyond the wind. The strength of the home against the wind is only one of the issues.

What does that even mean? "They know how to deal with hurricanes"? In the middle of a hurricane you sit in your house and hope the wind doesn't get much stronger because the pine trees in your backyard are bending.

The mayor of Miami has been begging people to get out.

Architects design houses. Did they use material that is hurricane proof. There are stronger codes on Caribbean islands, in terms of withstanding a hurricane, than there is in the US and Irma did some serious damage to some of those buildings.

I think that is the first time I've ever seen the phrase So n Sos written out.

Hope your sister is safe.

Uh.. No.

I'm 81 miles inland. I don't even tie down lawn furniture for a cat2.

Does their logic also apply to trailer parks since they get destroyed by them so often?

Many buildings in Miami are engineered to withstand cat 5 hurricanes after what Andrew did there. Newer buildings have glass that is an inch thick and can withstand a 2 x 4 flung straight at it at 150mph. If I lived in a building like that I'd be staying put too.

F all that sitting on the damn freeways for hours on end. Plus what if you don't have anywhere to go? Hotels are booked. Bring your own cot to the public shelter.

Storm surge usually washes this attitude away with the people holding it.

Wrong. Structural engineers design building structures for wind, seismic, storm surges, etc. Also, architects do not build, they design. Contractors build.

Most municipalities do not require an architect or engineer to design a house. The residential code is more strict in hurricane prone regions. The code is prescriptive, and a contractor just needs to meet the code minimum.

Guy I know very casually was telling me his sister in Miami told him she was going to 'ride it out'.

Any of these clowns see that old PSA about the "hurricane-proof" home that was wiped out during Camille?
