I was rear ended in 1997. Had back issues for approximately 15 years afterwards.
Don't let them cut on you. Get the MRI, but do as much PT as possible before resorting to surgery.
I'm in my early 40's now and stronger than ever. No back issues for the last 10+ years. Surgery only if it is the difference between walking or not.

Isn't he a surgeon though and can't do any general treatment.

Would recommend a PM&R doc over a surgeon, for at least the initial evaluation. And everyone has "buldging disks" on MRI. Need a good physical exam coupled with the history and MRI to figure out where to go. Would not recommend surgery if just pain, and no weakness in the leg.

My wife is having this problem now, it comes from years of rucking with a pack bigger than her while in the army. She currently sees Dr Micheal Zeringue of Pontchatrain Orthodo and Sports Medicine. She has been treated for pain management for about a year now and still has ongoing pain and loss of feeling in her legs. Dr Todd is supposed to do her disc fusion. If we can get the damn insurance to approve the surgery. The funny thing is, she was medically retired from the Army because of the back and this is the same insurance the Military provides. Such a pain in the arse.
