No, it isn't.

Nope. (3/ 1/3)=1. You're adding parentheses that don't exist.

3 divided by 1/3 is not 1. 3 multiplied by 1/3 is 1. 3 divided by 1/3 is 9.

DO you even math baw?

And, I added the parentheses, to focus where the focus was needed. PEMDAS says that you take the division first, so the 3 divided by 1/3 is answered first. Yet, you have to invert the denominator and multiply by 3 to answer properly. Then 9-9+1 equals 1.

That's not what's written though. What is written is 3 divided by 1 divided by 3, which most certainly equals 1.

Obviously. You, on the other hand...

Do me a favor and type 3/1/3 into any calculator.

You two are assuming because of the awkward spacing (and lack thereof) that you should solve the 1/3 before the 3 / 1. Which isn't correct.

I said the same thing in the last math question thread a few weeks ago, the common denominator (pun intended) in all these questions is a parenthesis (or lack thereof).

Technically this one isn't even poorly written. There is no division sign to confuse people. There is literally only one way to interpret this problem.

ETA: But yes, these stolen from facebook math problems are dumb.

To put what we both said into something qualitative:

Me:

Three divided by one-third equals nine. (TRUE)

You:

Three divided by one equals three, which then is divided by three, equals one. (TRUE)

It's all in how you interpret a shitty written problem.

edit: If you copy the OP's written equation and put it into WFA, you get 9.

There is no interpreting. It is written 3/1/3. There is exactly one way to solve that.
