Positive:
1. The defense was pretty awesome last night. The Freshman were very well prepared. Its funny to see Taylor be ahead of Phillips. Shows stars are not exact science.
2. I thought Darrell Williams looked better than Guice. He hit the holes and he is much quicker than last year. Different player.
3. Greedy Williams, Ed Paris, Delpit! DBU - Are you kidding me?
4. Great idea to take the plunge with freshman OL and get them all the reps early. They will need to be huge later on and this time means a ton.
5. Imagine when we have 13 players back....

Negative
1. Thought Etling was fine. I felt like every floated out route to sidelines is a pick 6 against Bama. Has to come out quicker or more zip.
2. So much praise for defense but man that BYU gameplan and QB was so bad. Reminded me of us on 01/09.
3. Donte Jackson - he's fast, and his man always seems open since his time here. Maybe I'm a minority but I might like Toliver/Greedy as starters.
4. Special Teams was average and Red Zone offense was bad but we were running the ball on 3rd and 7 on goal line. I don't think we cared about converting. Game was never in doubt.
5. My biggest concern is I think the WR talent is the worst it's been here in a decade. Mix of Dupree leaving and inexperience. One of the guys has to become a star. I have my doubts.

All in all a great debut and exceeded expectations but I do think that BYU team is very bad.

I'm a little nervous about our corners altogether. We'll see.

Agreed. Chark is good and he's versatile, but he's not a stud WR, IMO. Our offense as a whole isn't very talented. Outside of Guice, there is nothing special. That's not to say we still can't have a very good offense. I think Canada can get a lot out of this group. Danny is limited, but he can make the throws if he has time in the pocket. He knows when to scramble, too.

A little worried about the O-line, especially at guard.

Quit reading after #2. DW did not look better than Guice.

I think Gilmore is going to have a great year at nose tackle.. that was a BS roughing the passer call.

he isn't the most talented guy but he works his arse off and his hard work is paying off. I think he'll be a coach one day.

That offense was so vanilla and the coaching wanted it that way. They showed absolutely nothing for when they play the important games.

I saw a lot to be happy about, and a few things needing work. This is going to be a fun season.

We dominated BYU in every facet of the game. The offense was a well-oiled possession machine. Very simple game plan for the first game but Canada'd up with a million formations.

Defense was...well ridiculous. Personally liked the d-line play especially at NT.

The only negatives I saw were...

1. Red Zone efficiency needs to improve but it's game one with a limited playbook. But it sucks getting stopped inside the 5 twice.

2. Kickoffs. We got a touchback so + there, but 3 or 4 kickoffs landed well short of the goal line. Think one landed at the 8, that's just a ridiculous disparity.

PS: Did like O keeping his promise about Myles getting some time. The kid looked in control and CEH looked on point as well.

The team played very well last night all things considered. Special teams played a little sloppy (kick off coverage) at times in my opinion. Get the penalties and special teams play cleaned up and this will be a very formidable team.

I was surprised how bad BYU looked last night. Although that could be contributed to how much better LSU is than them. They usually have a fairly decent team and I was really surprised how bad their quarterback looked. That guy was terrible.

QB - Looked great, managed the game and made throws downfield. 3 incompletions were a drop and two smart throw aways. Reminded me of Flynn. In complete control of the OFF.
RB - Guice was Guice and Williams looked like the stud-recruit we thought he was when he came with LF. Guy has reshaped his body and will be an asset this season.
WR - solid night, good routes, got open and NO drops.
OL - above avg most of the night. Charles whiffed on goal line 4th down...but I'll cut the FR some slack
Play-calling; while I realize you don't show everything in game 1 vs BYU, we need to throw more on 1st down. Keep the DEF guessing and off balance. Fake jet sweep to quick throw to TE was nice! CLEM used it effectively vs Bama in NC game. Not sure all the motion sweeps, especially to RB's, will work vs better SEC competition/speed, but overall it was a great start to a new OFF style of FB. Red zone play-calling needs a little work.

DL: Got upfield and ate space, allowing LB's to make tackles. Like when I saw the (3) SOPH's (Lawrence, Alexander, Logan) across the front line at one point. Depth and talent is a plus this season.
LB: Made tackles, ran to the ball and made tackles. Nice to see FR getting reps. Nice pressure on stunts, but we need more pressure from Key's spot until he returns....which I hope if for Miss St game.
DB; Other than D Jackson, who got beat twice, they covered and tackled very well. Jackson needs to cut back on the SWAG and pick up his coverage skills. Young guys across the entire DEF played well and the future is bright!

ST: KO were short and coverage was AVG other than the one time I saw Monroe drop the returner at the 15. Can't miss those short FG's.

Good FB last night which is obviously a plus for the team/staff and for recruiting. Build on it and come out next week even better!

It's a valid concern. But the play calling knowing that the DBs couldn't get there was nice to see. I expect to see more quick slants and outs not thrown to the far side of the field once the defenses get tougher.

You mean when the defense we were playing was so good and dominating that we literally couldn't do anything no matter what we tried? I'll take it

Nah I'm with you there. Donte is fast, not a natural cover man imo. He'll continue to "start" but I see his snaps be split very quickly.

Nah the talent is loaded, just don't have any experience. They will be beasts by the time November rolls around imo.

Agreed on both counts.

Hopefully we continue to improve, just as the competition will. But very good week 1

Lol at your negatives through one game. People like you make this site unbearable at times. We held them under 100 yards total and you're blaming Donte Jackson because he allowed 2 passes to be caught for a total on 16 yards...

And every pass and every run and every formation won't work against Bama. We play 10 other teams outside of Bama, FYI

A decent showing for sure. Work on the penalties and quit looking like the LSU of the Miles era with that crap.

The OL will need to get things rolling as the season progresses as they will need to be stronger for Bama. It's not Bama's offense that worries me with Aranda in charge - it's our offense and Bama's defense. That is the benchmark.

And loved some freshmen getting plays.

Bad WR talent based on what? The number of drops last night? The passing yardage? If you're comparing this years WR's to OBJ and JL...maybe so...but...How many current teams have better WR's than those two? If you're comparing them to Dural/Dupre, I don't even need to state the obvious. Our WR's have to catch the ball and last night...they did.

Dee Anderson & Drake Davis have several years to prove you wrong and I'd put my money on Davis. Stephen Sullivan has FREAK size for a WR but we haven't used him correctly. How many BYU DB's would out-jump Sullivan in the red-zone? How many times did we give SS that opportunity? Jacoby Stevens could easily prove you wrong and it may be this year. Dillon was a stud HS WR and Canada obviously trusts his hands. He may lead the team in receptions & yards this year. Chark & Gage gave our future opponents something to think about. Both can catch the ball and both were used in the run game.

I thought Darrell Williams looked better than Guice. He hit the holes and he is much quicker than last year. Different player.

I agree with you on Williams. He looked great last night. Fast into the hole and lots of power. Reminds me of Guice (last year) when he was competing with LF7. BYU looked to be selling out on Guice and Canada will adjust. Guice made 122/yds look as boring as I've ever seen from him. Thing is, he was a few plays from another 200+ game and probably would have eclipsed that number had he been running late in the game. I'm glad he wasn't. Remember last year when people were saying that Guice was better than LF? Nice problem to have.

BYU's game-plan was to control the line of scrimmage. Run the ball and stop the run. That didn't happen. Canada didn't have to show very much because the game was never in doubt.

Game Thoughts - Positive and Negative - Definitely more positive being that we lucked up in missing out on Herman.

Taylor might be ahead of Phillips, but likely they taught Devin's position to Phillips and Donnie's position to Taylor. So they would not have a choice.

I thought the O-line got beat more often...
I didn't feel like we had a consistent push

I'd grade our O-line a C- due to fact we were playing BYU and didn't dominate offensive line....

I saw Brumfield miss blocks 2 minimum times
