Sorry for the de-rail because I think it's a good topic of discussion, but any time Larry Holmes is brought up I can't help but think of this...

He's probably around 8-10 all time.

Louis, Ali, Foreman, Marciano, Frazier, Dempsey, and Johnson are all clearly higher on the pantheon of boxing heavyweights.

There is literally no argument to be made placing him over Lennox Lewis or Evander Holyfield. At all.

Mount Rushmore?

For ALL weight divisions?

Not even close.

For Heavyweights?

Nope.

He was a comet that blew up tomato cans...and then faded against his two real opponents...Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis.

He's not Top 10 and it's not controversial. Nobody puts him in the Top 10 but idiots. Ring Magazine, Boxing Mag, Bert Sugar, whomever...boxing historians don't put Tyson in the Top 10.

For just Heavyweights, every list I've seen Tyson is around 11-15.

Lennox Lewis is criminally underrated because he was boring as shite and you couldn't get a glove on his huge arse. After he finished his jab fest with you, though, you look like he had taken a baseball bat to your face.

Lennox Lewis in his prime may be the best heavyweight who ever lived. Not unbeatable, but I think he'd be the favorite in any hypothetical matchup you could dream up.

Riddick Bowe is also very underrated. As bad as the division was in the 80s, the early to mid 90s heavyweights were pretty damn good.

Just below, I mean there's so many legends in boxing dating back to Jack Johnson that maintained excellence over a long stretch in their careers, even Ali despite that half his prime was revoked due to the conscientious objector controversy, and it's that longevity that distinguishes the Mount Rushmore boxers from the very good boxers. Iron Mike just had too short a prime and never really regained that status after the Buster Douglas fight for me to justify ranking him that high.

Ali was 127 years old when he fought Larry Holmes.

...and btw, Larry Holmes was actually 38 years old when he fought Tyson and had BEEN OUT OF BOXING FOR 2 YEARS and still went 4 rounds with Tyson.

And Holmes was prophetic - way before Holyfield and head-butting and biting ears and hitting Lennox behind the head after the bell.

In 1987, Holmes said: "I didn't see a guy with class in there, I see a guy who throws elbows, I see a guy who throws (head)butts and I see a guy who hits after the bell."

Tyson fought tomato cans and old washed up fighters from the golden age of heavyweight boxing in the 1970's.

That's why Tyson claimed the title so young, the division was practically vacant.

Yes. The division was terrible at the time.

He's not a top ten heavyweight.

I love Iron Mike, but in their primes:

Ali
Frazier
Foreman
Louis, Joe
Lewis, Lennox

would beat him in his prime.

Boxers probably just outside of top ten.

Specimens/ Entertainers easily 2-3.

Tyson was one of the most exciting to watch and the prison stint didn't help his career. There is truth to the fact that he was on his way to greatness and lost his way after Cus.

The fact that hardly nobody except a couple of people mentioned Sonny Liston and Jack Dempsey being in over Tyson tells me all I need to know about the knowledge of boxing in this thread

Top 10 would be

1. Ali
2. Joe Louis
3. Sonny Listen
4.Larry Holmes
5. Jack Johnson
6. Jack Dempsey
7. George Foreman
8. Joe FraIer
9.Rocky Marciano
10. Lennox Lewis

Based on successful title defenses
