Since you still sound like you might not get it, instead of all of that video traffic going over your own internal wifi network, it is going out your friend's paid internet connection and in your own paid internet connection. If you had the Plex server in your own house you would use zero paid bandwidth to access it. Since it's at you're friends house you both are using paid bandwidth for you to access it.

Jesus frick you dont say

But we also have constant downloads of movies and shows moving through that server since it only takes a few taps from a phone to put in a download. We have anywhere from 1-10 remote users using the server at once

but what do I know

If those remote users aren't all at your house then someone's going to take the bandwidth hit so I guess it might as well be your friend. If they are all or are mostly in your house, you just multiplied how much paid bandwidth y'all are wasting.

In that case you are saving bandwidth because none of the downloads go through your connection and none of the other users' viewing will go through your connection.

But all that you view goes through your connection, whereas if you had the server at your house none of your viewing would go through your connection.

So yeah, in the end you're saving bandwidth by not running it at your house.

Even though I have an unlimited data connection (Cox Business class), I still prefer to run my Plex server from my home.
Short term power or internet outage? My home network infrastructure is all battery-backed, I still have hundreds of hours of viewing at my fingertips over WiFi
Long term power or internet outage/natural disaster scenario? Start up the generator, kick back and relax with hundreds of titles on demand.
