So what would have happened if one of the boxers would not have made weight?

Do they cancel the fight?

It happened to Mayweather a few years back and he ended up just paying a $600,000 fine.

No. The fight goes on as planned but the fighter who missed weight has to give a certain percentage of his money to his opponent.
So if McGregor missed weight, he would have had to pay a portion of his purse to Mayweather.
I don't know how it works in boxing, but if a fighter in the UFC misses weight for a championship fight, the fight still goes on but it's not a title fight anymore.

things have changed in boxing.....a long time ago, the boxer that came in under could determine if the fight would go forward or not....also, in years past for undercard type fights, there would be a standby boxer so that a fight could take place (so the books would have action).
Today, it is all contract driven...but the boxer that weighs in under has the final say.....but the money swings heavily in his favor.

So they still fought?

Gervonta Davis came in over weight today. He is in the Co-Main Event tomorrow night against Fonseca for his IBF Junior Lightweight Title. He came in 2lbs over and they stripped him of his title. The fight will go on but the belt will be vacant if Davis wins.

They have weigh in 30 hours before fight. Plenty of time to drop 2 lbs.
I hate early weighin for lightweight, welter and middle.
Taller guys pack on 10 or 12 lbs.
Its b.s.
Weigh in day before. If fails loses half purse. Then weigh in 30 minutes before fight.
Loses another 1/4 of purse if fail.
Weigh in 30 minutes before. Then the 148 or 160 is truth.

That extra 2 pounds might be impossible. These fighters dehydrate themselves to lose weight and going into a sauna to try to cut those extra pounds can be dangerous. Especially now since these fighters can't use ivs to rehydrate themselves anymore. When Conor fought at 145 he looked like he was on the brink of death at weigh ins.
