Looking specifically at Garmin EchoMap 54CV for $439 or 54cv or get the 53CV for $359 and pay $100 for the Louisiana Maps

I have a Garmin and I like it a lot. But if you want to use a map card then choose another brand. As far as I know you can't use another card with them like you can with a Lowrance, Humminbird, or Raymarine. Just something to keep in mind.

This, IIRC Garmin has no card ports. Humminbird will except SD card maps and Lowrance will except microSD cards. All cards aren't formatted for all units. It's been my observation that some cards like the Standard Mapping cards work in Lowrance but not in Humminbird so if you have a particular card you're interested in using make sure you buy a compatible Unit.

I ha e a Garmin EchoMap 74DV and the Garmin satellite map. It works Ok, but Id probably go with Lowrance if I could redo....their map has better contrast of water/marsh and I often have to take off my Costas to see during the day.

Other than that, I’m pretty happy with the EchoMap. Agree that you should go with the largest screen you can afford. Also suggest you mount on top of a Ram Mount to bring closer to eye level and better visibility.

This is what I did after researching and looking at them close at BassPro. The Garmin plus the $100 LA Bayou card was the best value for me. And yes you can overlay satellite images like other brands. Just buy the right one. The ones that end with an odd number such as the 53cv are preloaded with LakeVu maps which focus more on freshwater north of I-10. The even number models (54) are preloaded with US bluechart which is mainly for offshore. I bought the 53cv earlier this year along with the LA Bayou card since I mainly fish freshwater north of I-10 and an occasional trip down to the coast. I suggest going somewhere like BassPro or Academy and comparing the features of all the brands before buying. I ended up saving some $ and buying on Amazon.
