Seriously, WTF is 4000 soldiers going to do? Either wipe them out or come home.

I am very disappoint in my president if this news is accurate.
If they think a more stable Afghanistan is what's best for our country then OK, not for it but I get it. Having said that what in the entire frick is 4000 soldiers going to do?
Send enough to kill every rag wearing, goat fricking bastard over there or bring our boys and girls home.

I agree, the President needs to explain what 4,000 troops will do but I remember him saying something about not telegraphing the enemy our intentions.

FID. Train and support local forces to claim whatever victory they are looking for and hopefully they can maintain it.
It works for the first part and doesn't cost American lives. The second part always falls through, and would even after a full US invasion

Any action he takes he is taking a different kind of ownership than simply inheriting it. Given that, 4k troops would seem silly given its likely limited impact.

I mention it's all usually lost eventually anyway when we leave, I'm not against your view just showing the other side.
I doubt these troops are going over to run a bunch of Direct Action Ops and come home in body bags. It might be to keep things stable through Foreign Internal Defense as other diplomatic options are being pursued. Like I said I don't know for sure what these diplomatic options are, I doubt anyone here does. Everyone seems to respect Mattis let's his results.
The troops are going, nothing I can do. I wish them luck and can only hope it leads to some positive outcome.

Classic Washington policy making.
First, no one questioned the premise. No one asked if this war was worth fighting.
Second, they started by considering what was politically possible, how many troops they could afford to send rather than actually looking at the problem, and figuring out what it would require.
