Who can't afford $250,000 homes these days? Chump change.
Good luck finding a family home for that in a decent city that doesn't have bars on the windows or ride on wheels.

Define "decent city".
Obviously you aren't finding that in New Orleans, but I'd wager there are plenty mid-sized cities with homes in the 250k range.

Come on now. Maybe its like that in Baton Rouge but there are many houses you can get in subdivisions that are in nice areas between 250-300k. Just cant expect marble, heart of pine, and a huge poolhouse out back.

There will be debate on this, but there are 3br homes about 30 years old in decent areas for sub 200K in BR

It's crazy how different it is from state to state.
In Louisville, KY, $250k will get you a 3100 sq. ft. home with a finished walk out basement, wood floors, granite entry ways and counter tops, gas fireplace, 2 tier deck, and many other amenities in a closed beautiful neighborhood surrounded by the same for miles.
