GoFundMe/Fundraiser - Travel/Hotel expenses for 6month Medical stay

Newborn son has congenital heart issues and will require a 5-6 month stay at Texas Children's in between his first open heart surgery at 10 days and his 6 month surgery. He may not need to stay in the hospital the entire time but will be required to stay in town. Is it trashy to set up a GoFundMe to help offset some travel/stay expenses? Or would a fundraiser, whether it be food plates, casino night, a dance/theme, or something like that with silent auctions be more socially acceptable. I have never been in favor of GoFundMe except for extreme situations which I am not sure if this qualifies.
Just an update: We were airlifted out of BR last Friday night around midnight and the hospital took a few days to acquaint themselves with Jack. The did several echos and ultrasounds to get a good understanding of his anatomy before coming up with a plan of action. Jack's surgery was performed Wednesday and took all day - 7am to 6pm They performed the Norwood procedure and everything went as planned. He has a little heart arrhythmia (SVT) but they said it may go away on its own. He has been slowly weening off his current meds and oxygen and progressing nicely. He will require the Glenn surgery at 5-6 months and then will be able to come home. The last phase of the surgery, the Fontan, is performed at 3 years. The Glenn and Fontan are less invasive as the Norwood.
Thanks to the positive feedback from this thread, knowing the tough criticism of the OT, we went ahead and did a YouCaring fund. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers, and any donations

If you need money and want to see if people will help you with expenses (for whatever), start a gofundme and tell your story.

IMHO, this is one of the few things go fund me is awesome for. If a big community can come together and help a family get money to offset the costs of staying with a child who has to see a specialist, why poke fun at it?
Good luck to you, your child, and your family.
This is the OT though, so prepare for offers to frick your wife while you're gone. These guys are such assholes I can't stand it sometimes. But can you post some pics so I can know if I should hit on her? I'm not saying I'll bang her or anything, but I'll let her gently nuzzle my penis for comfort while I go to town on that booty hole. Nom nom nom nom nom

That would be far from the worst GFM page you could set up.

Fundraiser is good.
Gofundme is not the route I would take

Not at all. I believe St Jude's cover all expenses. Did you get a consult there?
ETA: Didn't t ad that the little one already had surgery. Hope for a speedy rrecovery cover

I feel like this is a great reason for a GFM or any of the other fundraiser ideas you listed.
Best of luck to you and your family.

Why? It's convenient and reaches a much larger audience than a conventional fundraiser or some type of event. It's easy for someone to click on a Facebook link and donate.

This is EXACTLY what gofundme should be used for. Legit causes....Not snowflakes begging for money to "furnish my kids with the cool toys because I don't want to work at a real job".

Just do it, who cares what anyone else thinks. If they disagree with it then they don't have to give. To me it seems justified based on your circumstances, especially with a baby involved. I'm typically against gofundme, especially when people are asking for money for things that could have been prevented with good decision making. If you aren't comfortable with doing it yourself maybe ask a close friend or family member to do it on yalls behalf. Good luck with everything and I hope your little one has a safe and speedy recovery.

Start it, post a link in the OP... I will donate and then peer pressure others into doing the same.

Your kid is more important than some douche that may call it trashy.

I would look into an option other than GoFundMe, which appears to take 8% (5% for them, 3% for processing) from each donation. I've heard other people mention sites that don't take a percentage.

Thank you for all of the responses so far. They have been very encouraging. I did look at alternatives to GoFundMe, like YouCaring. I believe they take 2.9%.

You Caring is great because of the blog.
It makes it easier to keep everyone updated instead of having to call family & friends & worrying you forgot someone.
