Grover Cleveland was the last Democrat who could be classified as a classical liberal. The party nominated populist William Jennings Bryan in 1896 and then followed the economic policies of free silver and agrarian populism. Had Cleveland lived through WWI, he would have become a Republican. The policies of Calvin Coolidge and later Robert Taft were much closer to Cleveland than the Democrat of the mid-20th century.

They stuck them in government houses, paid them tribute to have children out of wedlock and not work, then blamed their problems on racist Republicans

As I said, it proves that most people didn't vote for economics reasons the way they do now.
The Southern strategy is bullshite, but it is not a lie that many Democrats back then were Fiscal Conservative and Socially Conservative, aka modern day Republican.

Not enough of them to make their platforms not be class warrior shite.
IE, just like modern day democrats.

So did the parties switch or not?

People can post all the links they like from opinion idiots. I simply say fine. Google the Democratic platform for every election from about 1880 forward. Tell me if any of them are NOT class warrior platforms. The end.
The majority of Democratic platforms were class warfare. The only difference is the GOP saw an opportunity after the Civil Rights Acts to take advantage of disgruntled whites in the South.
Its politics 101, take advantage of a voting bloc that previously was controlled by your opponent that is currently discontent.
Honestly, the saddest part of all of this is that some people feel the only way they can get ahead in life is at the expense of an entire group of people who have no control over the economics in the country.

The 1888 election, in which the entire South voted Fiscally conservative for a yankee from New Jersey.

This video destroys that pretty easily.
I simply repeat.
Read Dem platforms from 1880 forward.
Find one that is NOT class based and "Republicans are the party of the rich" based.
When you don't.
I rest my case.

BINGO
Parties..........SAME
Changing who you sell your class warfare to doesn't make you not a class warrior class envy party.

I'm saying the parties didn't switch. There were like 21 southern democrat senators that voted against civil rights. Only one of them switched parties. The other 20 either continued to run as democrats or the people in their place ran as democrats. Republicans didn't even start really winning the south until the late 80s or 90s.

American Presidency Project
I just pulled one out of the list, as it seemed very close to today's democrats.

They just changed their minds a few times on how to do that.
And Republicans haven't?

quote:did I say they didn't? The assertion here is that the Democrats are and always have been the party of class Warrior and class Envy and have always portrayed Republicans as the party of the mean old rich.
And Republicans haven't
The entire Theory that the parties switched is complete and utter bullshite and the only support for it is if one focus is entirely on race. And even that is suspect as was pointed out by other posters.
Changing which group of poor people you Pander to is not switching ideologies

The parties didn't switch per se, the south switched parties. Once the south left the Democratic Party, its more liberal factions didn't have to worry about cowtowing to southern bourbon demands. The GOP became more conservative as its main base of support became the old confederacy.

A higher percentage of Republicans voted in favor of the Civil Rights Act than Democrats. Why would disgruntled whites back the Republican party knowing that? Especially considering that the loudest outrage of the CRA came from the Democrats. Wouldn't racist Southerners want to reward racist Democrats with their continued support?
