BYU Defensive Breakdown

BYU analysts and fans seem to have some sort of idea that their Defensive will be on the same tier with LSU and this is whats going to be the difference maker in the game being they also believe their Offense is strides ahead of anything LSU can field. So I decided to take a look at some of their 2016 numbers being they are returning leading starters on Defense. (I know its a whole new season, but Im bored asf at work)
2016 they played 6 teams with a top 50 Offensive Rank (Utah actually ended up #51)
#7-Toledo: Toledo racked up almost 700 yards in a 2 point loss
#17 West Virginia: BYU Loses at home 35-32 with 4 Turnovers
#21 Boise St: BYU takes the one point loss after giving up 442 yards through the air (144 yards over Boise's year average of 298 per game)
#44 Miss St: Double OT Home Win over a Miss St team that finished under .500
#48 Wyoming: 3 Point win in a Bowl game, nothing to turn your nose up at...but it was against an 8-5 Wyoming team that had a pretty soft 2016 schedule
#51 Utah: One point loss to a rival that had 6 turnovers in the game
(Minus Southern Utah) BYU's Opponents combined year average was 449 Total yards per game. BYU Allowed a combined average of 380 yards per game against them. So if 69 yard differential makes them a top tier defense then we may be in a world of shite...
BYU ranked #96 in Passing Defense @ 252 yards per game.
Etling averaged 200 Passing yards per game as a starter, Hopefully we see an improvement in the Canada Offense game one.
For reference, Since Coach O took over LSU averaged 464 yards per game and Pitt averaged 446 in 2016
Biggest takeaway Ive seen from watching BYU play is their inability to tackle on first contact. This is were Guice could blow the game open as long as the Oline plays to their potential.
Just my opinions...

Damn. You must have been bored as shite at work...
Putting all these numbers together looks like...work...
Why not just....do some work?
___
BYU will give us a better game than most think.
LSU will pull away after half-time adjustments.

LSU will change byus season their attitude for better or worse going forward.
500+ yards for LSU.
Passing will not be an option for BYU hope they can run the ball.

If they can't tackle on first contact, OH BOY! It's gonna be a long day for them going against one the most ferocious runners in the nation. Guice simply doesn't go down with one hit.

Well that certainly contradicts any notion that BYU's defense is anywhere near a upper SEC program's norm.
LSU has been slow starters under Les and that is one thing that we all hope to see change going forward.

Just poked a few more numbers around for a reference
Minus Jacksonville St, LSU Opponents combined Total Yards Ave was 447ypg.
Their Total Yard Ave. against LSU was 300yps
Differentials of 69 yards vs 147yards
147 yards may not seem like much but it is 33% of their total yard average...

I won't argue your opinion, but I will argue a mistake in stating facts. First, no one is saying that the BYU defense is in the same tier as LSU's defense. And second, BYU played West Virginia in Washington, D.C. at the Redskins stadium. If that was a home game, I can't wait to see what the game in Houston is.
As for some stats, BYU gave up way too many yards between the 20s, but only 19.4 points per game--good for 15th in the country. It was an exercise in heart burn watching the teams churn their way into the redzone only to be turned away or forced into kicking field goals.
Don't ever bring up that Utah game, please.
I looked at Pitt's stats on offense in 2016 and all I see is points. If Canada can get a team to replicate that in the first game, let alone first year of his system, then you won't have him for long.
BYU fans are incredulous about a first game offense performance because of what we've seen from our own boys in the past when new systems have been installed. Who knows if that means anything when it comes to 2017's version of LSU, but that argument is not without merit.

I think lsu may start slow but should win by 14-17 after the second half .

Must be a liberal trying to erase that horrible Utah game history.

My mistake, I looked at the 2016 schedule and it didnt say @West Virginia, I just assumed it was Home

Those stats don't bode well for their defense..
We gave up 220 yards and 9 points to #3 Louisville.
If our defenses were actually semi equal we probably would have given up around 45 points and well over 500 yards.

Beat a top 25 team outside of Provo this decade and you may have a point

LSU will rack up 400 yrds. just rushing. They can easily get 300-400 yrds in the air, closer 400+. So it is gonna be a big scoring game for us on both sides and don't forget about special teams and turnovers. Thats how we achieve these results, with BYU turnovers and our Special teams play.

None of this really matters,,, Its a new year with different players for both teams..........
