If you do not pay the extra bit for uninsured motorist in your policy you are taking a huge gamble in LA.
Uninsured motorist is a huge insurance company scam in most instances. What do you think it covers? Because most people don't know. It covers bodily injury. You know what else covers bodily injury? The health insurance you already have. In fact, health insurance will kick in first and the uninsured will only kick in if your health policy doesn't cover. Ask your car insurance agent about this next time they try to tack that onto your bill. Uninsured also allegedly covers damages for personal injury but good luck getting your own insurance company to give you a substantial pain and suffering payout.
Now UNDERinsured motorist might be of interest to those driving an especially expensive vehicle but even that is unlikely. Your policy would come in after the other guys and only then would underinsured start.

You couldn't be more wrong if you tried. Anyone driving without Uninsured Motorist is nuts. It's critical option no one should pass up.

Your medical insurance will pay for your expenses minus your deductible. It will not pay for pain and suffering, loss of wages(past or future), or compensation to the family in the event of wrongful death. I am a retired ins agent. I can tell you that I never saw an attorney who did not buy UM. THAT should tell you something. Ins agents will not go without it. THAT should also tell you something. The other option is to listen to random posters on the internet who read something somewhere one time....

Your health insurance is not the at fault parties privilege of a reason of not being responsible for your health insurance bills. You are able to collect 100% of what your health insurance pays out. Jesus Christ you gave out some bad information.
