Can I ask what ought to be obvious questions?
First, groundwork. I happen to agree that we should have a basic level of health care available to all. Note, I didn't say EQUAL health care, but yes, I think we can figure out how to ensure people are taken care of.
So. My questions are simple.
1. Why don't we simply approach needy people in need of health care the same way we approach needy people in need of food(welfare) or needy people in need of housing(public housing, etc)? We don't look at people who need housing and say, "ok, build em all the same kind of house the guy with the 6 figure job has".
2. Basically, why do we need to effectively nationalize health care for 30 million people? It makes no numerical sense. We could simply have needs based public assistance like we do for anything else. Why not?
3. And, let's cover the hard one. Why can't we treat the person CAPABLE of buying insurance that prioritizes other things the same way we treat the person CAPABLE of buying food that prioritizes partying all week? "Whoops, looks like you'll be hungry.........bad choices".

Well, my answer to those questions aren't really important. I think there should some form of nationalized healthcare for everyone.
In perusing this thread, it seems like most of those arguing against it being a right just don't want the less privileged in society having the same access to healthcare they get through their private, mostly employer provided, health insurance. Just send them to the ER where they can get a $10,000 bill they can't pay and keeps them in that lower class for the foreseeable future. Great way to run a civilized society.
