Here are a few

"The Blue Hole" in Santa Rosa. It is an 80' deep natural spring that is a constant 65 degs
White Sands & Alamogordo
Madrid, NM
Carlsbad Caverns
The Alamo (from Texas not New Mexico, of course)
I still have a TON more, plus more spots such as Santa Fe and Carlsbad Caverns, and San Antonio, TX

I'm going to be taking 66 when heading from Tennessee to Cali in a few weeks. Any recommendations for stops along the way? Including restaurants. Pictures look awesome

I love old roadside motels like those.

As for your stops, you asking about stops for just a few minutes or maybe a 1/2-day excursion?
Unfortunately, most of Route 66 in New Mexico no longer exists. They laid I-40 on top of it, but if you are going to travel I-40, try and stop at some of the towns where you will see markers stating "Route 66". Tucumcari and Santa Rosa are two of the towns. It is sad, but these towns are pretty much dead. We stayed in Tucumcari, and it looked like 80% of the businesses where boarded up. The towns have very little revenue.
Points of interest from Amarillo to Santa Fe exit (I didn't go to Albuquerque).
Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo (free)
Glenrio exit on TX/NM line, if you go left under I-40, you can take the original Route 66 (pre-1937). It is a dirt/gravel road with a couple ghost towns. It travels for quite some time. We took it from Glenrio to Endee
The truck stop in Endee has an awesome car museum (free).
Tucumcari has a couple good restaurants, KIX is a roadside diner that only serves breakfast and lunch, they close at 2pm. The other is Dale's (I believe). It is next to KIX and is the same owners. They are open all day. We didn't eat at Dale's, but I heard it was good. We did eat breakfast at KIX, it was really good.
Tucumcari has three museums, Dinosaur, Route 66, and Railroad museums. The Dinosaur museum is kind of like the Kids' Museum in New Orleans.
If you SCUBA dive and have your equipment, the "Blue Hole" is a must in Santa Rosa. It is an 80' deep natural spring that is a constant 65 degs. If you don't SCUBA div, you can still just swim in it. Its $5 to park, free to swim, plus there is a swim park next door.
Santa Fe is the most beautiful city I have ever seen in the US. It is an hour or so north of I-40 and I highly recommend stopping for at least a day. The original (pre-1937) Route 66. Visit Canyon St and the Plaza for restaurants and shops. There is also a railroad museum.

I forget what the sand is made of, but it does not get hot like any other desert or beach. It can be 100+ degs and the sand will still be 70 deg. You walk around barefooted. The white sand stretches as far as your eye can see.

I was a full-time musician in my late teens/early 20's and my first national tour went out west all through west Texas, NM and California. It was the first time i had ever gone to that part of the country. These pictures brought back so many memories. Especially the roadside motel. It just feels so different than the south there. Thanks for this nostalgia :)

My family made this trip in 1975. Our best vacation ever. In 2015 my dad and I made the same trip, stopping in all the small towns. Just he and I spending two weeks talking about life and everything else. That was the best trip ever.

Awesome work!
my house actually sits on Route 66, still a dream of mine to back out of the drive way, and keep going.

That sounds incredible. I wish I had been able to do something like that with my dad.
OP, great pictures. More please.

Haha, for one thing I hate driving, so I need to get a few people who wouldn't mind splitting.
Kinda cool tho, there are several 1950's style motels right around me.

This is amazing, thanks so much for the heads up. We will probably make a few half day or full day excursions but mostly little roadside stops.

No Blue Hole?
I took a couple shots of it but I didn't care for them. It may have been cool to shoot at night with it lit from underneath.
Edit:
Here is "The Blue Hole"

As you can see in this map, the old Route 66 went up to Las Vegas, over to Santa Fe, and back down to Albuquerque. It was rerouted straight across in the 40's. I HIGHLY recommend visiting Santa Fe, following the old Route 66 or just cut north at "Clines Corner" on HWY 285, like I did. 285 is super scenic!!!
