Lexus has plenty of markup. Like I said earlier coming to my dealership like an a-hole because Gerry lane or allstar doesn't properly train and hire is not neccessary.
All I can vouch for is my own place.

Most are on par with career criminals, ambulance chasers, politicians, and "journalists" when it comes to integrity.

There are exceptions. Maggio in New Roads is usually one of them.

When I first meet with salesman, I take out my cell and put on a 1 hr timer.

Tell the guy that I am leaving when timer hits zero if we don't have a deal.

Always better to set expectations at the onset

Nothing wrong with a time limit. Same exact experience just walking faster.

I don't walk in there like an a-hole. I'm polite, I listen and then we get to talking. Always polite, always. I tell them upfront what I think the invoice is and I tell them about holdback, etc. If they won't go that far I walk. Nobody's feelings are hurt. I go elsewhere and repeat. Eventually, as I said earlier, they call you back with the line about needing to make their numbers.

I know that, but I also know the demand is so high that they don't have to negotiate as much. I know if I want it I'm going to pay more than at other makes.

Well, this thread pretty much confirms that car salesmen are douches.

No, but a plant operator is actually a respectable career. Something you wouldn't know about.

Anytime I want a new car I call the sales manager and tell them what I want. They find it and tell me how much. Last year I told them I wanted a black 4Runner limited with tan interior. He called me back and said he found one in Hattiesburg. I picked it up that afternoon after about 30 minutes of paperwork.

Most dealerships will not make money on new vehicle sales and salesman usually earn the minimum commission ($100) on a new vehicle sale.
Bread and butter is on used vehicle sales for the salesman. Some earn 30-50% of the profit on the sale as their commission.

Dealers also earn money on financing thru banks. Banks will sell an interest rate to a dealer at a cheaper rate for every vehicle financed thru their bank. As an example, Bank "X" may have a 3.95% rate, but will charge the dealer @ 3.45% which allows the dealer to clear the difference when you sign the loan.

Credit Unions won't do that though. Instead they will give dealers a kick back for every loan dealers send their way. Kick back varies however it's usually a couple hundred per vehicle.

Now on trade in value of your vehicle...we all want top dollar, but be real. You wouldn't buy your vehicle at retail so why would you expect to get retail? One salesman I met many years ago had a form made up just for those type of people. If you want retail price for your vehicle, you agree to the following terms:
* you guarantee vehicle is in top condition.
* you will take care of any issues that arise for a period of 18 months.

2 things usually happens when the form is produced, they either walk away or they accept a reasonable and fair trade in allowance.
Basically dealers don't trust you when you claim your vehicle is pristine.

No problem, I'm just going to enjoy my Sunday at my home in U club with my 4 year old. It's tough looking at this W-2 and loaded 401k knowing every car we've sold has absolutely come from fricking people over.

Like ALL professions there are good salespeople and lousy salespeople.

I just bought my wife a vehicle a few months back. The two salesmen were top notch. Finance department was also.

Yes. This thread serves as a reminder to those that haven't bought a car recently.

There are as many Bill Heards out there as there are billboard lawyers.

Maybe on the smallest compact car with the lowest trim package. This wouldn't be the case for SUV's or trucks. There are thousands of dollars in profit built into those, which is why they can advertise thousands of dollars in discounts. If you pay their discounted price, they are still making good money off of your sale

I work in the industry. I've seen the #'s myself. Again the difference in invoice and msrp is usually shite. You made my point about discounts and incentives being a lot of the money. If a customer doesnt ask about an incentive they don't get the break, and the dealership pockets that $.

How's that getting hammered? I don't know all the details but I know he wasn't out to screw anyone over and I know he wouldn't let anyone screw him over financially. Hes an extremely honest man but definitely not a sucker when it came to finances.
