It's worth tuning in just to see niantic get their shite pushed in by the massive, extremely angry crowd in Chicago right now

Like the game, so much has gone wrong with PokémonGoFest

CEO got booed hard

They are apparently going to refund thousands of tickets. So many people spent lots of money to get to Chicago only to get shite on by niantic who is pulling a Fyre fest essentially

After Pokémon Go Fest kicked off this morning in Chicago’s Grant Park, it wasn’t long before players experienced their worst fear: widespread server issues that prevented them from logging in.

quote:

During the event’s on-stage opening ceremony, players made Niantic CEO John Hanke painfully aware of the game’s current issues. Cries of “Fix the game!” and “Fix the servers!” drowned out Hanke’s remarks, and more frustrated players even booed him when he came on stage.

We can't play

Considering the issues they've had from the start I don't see why anyone thought this would go smoothly.

Niantic should get an award for their incompetence.

The only reason there are still people even playing this game and giving them money is solely based on the Pokemon IP alone. Niantic has done everything in their power to frick up a game with such massive potential.

I didn't even know this was still a thing let alone having a fest for it.

I go to Ingress events all the time and they go well. Pokémon level crowds are just too much for one place. They need to do multiple events more regionally at the same time and get a ton of servers.

It's baffling that they took one of the biggest cultural phenomenons I can recall in gaming and just drove that sumbitch right into the ground in just a few months.

Someone called it, this game was a hit for a few months and then tanked, well maybe not if people spent real money to attend a festival for a POS game. I played for about a month and then deleted it and forgot about it.

I wouldn't say it tanked, it went to a more realistic player base. It is still making crazy amounts of money and the change to the gym battle bonus has made it harder to get stuff for free, so even more money for them.

There is no way any game was going to keep the amount of users Pokemon had in it's first few months. They had people who never played games before playing that because it was hip.

I play Niantic's even more forgotten game, Ingress. We only get a few thousand to a few hundred people at each event depending on if it is a region primary or a secondary site. These are done each quarter with about 20 or so sites total. With that little people, we still create hell on cellular networks. A Pokemon sized crowd with one location and the only time an event has been done would just overwhelm the cellular providers. This had trouble written all over it.

If this is actually true I'm honestly not sure how Niantic is an operating business. How dumb can you get?

You do realize how small of a company Niantic is and how big a city is right?

I am not sure how they did Chicago, but Ingress events take place all over downtown areas of a city. This area is much too big to expect a tiny company like Niantic to setup up wifi networks to support thousands of people.

They are not in the business of providing a data service, they are app developers.

All the money they just made off one game they could upgrade to the size of fricking Google. This isn't some indie shite. This is a pokemon game with a LOT of financial backing.

Why though? The amount of money it would take to scale that large to be able to get through all the regulations and work with each city they go to, to put in a mobile large scale wifi network to support the large play areas would be ridiculous. Niantic isn't the only one reaping the profits from this game.

A temporary wifi covering the area of the festival to support the massive traffic they are creating is the least they could do.

Much larger and successful events in much smaller areas that even happen much more often don't even do this, why should Pokémon?

Google is one of the largest companies in the world with a market cap of 670 billion dollars and yearly revenue of ~90 billion. Niantic made a tiny fraction of Google's revenue from Pokémon Go. LoL which is significantly bigger than Pokémon Go made just shy of 2 billion last year.

Niantic is nothing compared to Google.
