I'll simply say this: If you see this movie and wonder why you should care about the characters, that's on you.

Outstanding. I really think this is the best thing Nolan has done.
A lot of his movies try too hard at times with dialogue. This one is limited dialogue, and so much of this is told visually and with the score doing heavy lifting. Pay the extra money and see this in 70mm IMAX.
ETA: The pacing is by far the most impressive thing, though. I kept waiting for it to drop after the opening and it just is relentless. The score blends so well.

I loved it. I have never felt so desperate and hopeless in a movie before. When they had finally made it ashore and were on the train it still felt hard to believe it was over. I am not sure how I felt about that one kid dying, but I guess it was supposed to be a little more symbolic i.e. loss of innocence in war (something along those lines maybe?) Nevertheless, I really enjoyed this film.

I'm kind of mixed on it. Maybe I need to sleep on it to fully comprehend.
It was a great experience (70mm IMAX) especially the sound and score. The lack of character development was a non issue. You care about them. Tom Hardy was a boss.
I thought the non linear storyline was choppy though not hard to follow. I know special fx were limited but seemed obvious in certain scenes (3 planes in formation, people jumping from boats).

Is this the official discussion thread? If so then I'll state again, the hype was real. As another poster mentioned the lack of character development did not negatively affect me caring about them. If you need a reason to care about someone in a historical war movie when we know who the good guys are then idk what to tell you
The main gripe with past Nolan movies is that he tends to go a bit overboard and too long on the runtime, this movie did not do that. It left me wanting more in a good way
Awesome movie, go see this in theaters in IMAX or 70mm IMAX if you're lucky to have one close by

Yeah, the lack of character development didn't bother me one bit. I thought it awesome. Watching it in IMAX was just an amazing experience.

The 3 planes were not cgi and am fairly certain the people jumping from boats wasn't either

In another thread, someone said that real planes were used and that is great because it's impossible to replicate natural flying. In the scene when they are flying in formation, it looked like one plane was filmed and two mirror images were added. They banked in perfect unison. As far as people jumping off the boats, some looked like Titanic.

There are pictures of the 3 planes flying together during filming and I'm sure the guys flying them knew what they were doing. I could be wrong, but from what I've seen reading about the movie that wasn't cgi

Very little CGI was used. They even built a replica of "the Mole" (that long arse pier) almost to scale from what I read.

Technically and visually, one of the most impressive movies I've ever seen. The cinematography is incredible.
The complaints about the movie lacking character development miss the mark, IMO. I don't think it's unintentional that the only characters that get any sort of development are Mark Rylance and his son. Having 30-45 minutes of exposition would have detracted from the movie. I love how they throw you right in from the first scene.

I wish I could see it in 70mm IMAX.
Going to the 7:00 show at the AMC IMAX. I prefer the Cinnemark and their XD screen, but for some ungodly reason they are showing a movie called Girls Trip on the XD. What the frick is that bullshite?

Some stories have a built in advantage in terms of getting you to care about the characters. A bunch of young soldiers trying to escape the Nazis is one of them.

I also love how they contrasted the reactions of the survivors, their superiors, and those back home. People in England were relieved and greeted the survivors like heroes, and the officers who feared for their soldiers were also visibly happy. However, it was clear the young soldiers weren't sharing in the joy. They had just been driven out of continental Europe and failed in their objective, so it makes sense that they didn't necessarily feel like heroes.

That's the way I felt. It was easy to follow on visual clues that these 3 storylines would intertwine. But it didn't seem to mesh as smoothly as it could have maybe. The score really drove home the pacing which was outstanding.

Is this worth seeing in 70mm or IMAX rather than standard theater screen?

Saw it last night with my kids in IMAX and it was fantastic
