Out of Bodega Bay with my dad. I thought I had a record holding lingcod. Got it up to the boat and it has a huge ray. I had drifted off the reef and didn't know it. It was a heart breaker.

Big black drum. I know what it is every time, but still get a little hopeful....
ETA: or a big lady fish for that first couple seconds when you've been catching trout.

Grouper fishing and bring in a shark from 300 feet down after 20 mins of cussing
Throw a jig onto a rig leg hoping for a cobia and get a king
Jigging crappie and have a half pound bass take you for a ride

We live in Louisiana. There's no point in keeping something that has all these stipulations on how to make it edible.

Yeah, anything that starts with "well, if you cook it right" isn't worth the time with all the fish around that can be cooked almost any way and be good.

Was site fishing on a flat this weekend and saw a really nice trout. It disappeared into an area that I couldnt see so I just blind casted. 2 seconds later it was smoked.
4 seconds later a ladyfish jumped.

The only stipulation is it needs to be fresh but go ahead and keep throwing them back or killing them if it makes you feel better about yourself. A choupique is 10x better than a bass. It fights harder and it taste alot better.

Fishing near big lake with live shrimp, and hang a monster. Thought sure it was a trophy red fish. After 10 minutes I finally get him next to the boat, and it's a huge gar.

Not trolling and if you believe Im stupid for eating a choupique then you have much bigger issues.
A bass is on the bottom of my list of freshwater fish to eat right above a goo.

Friend and I were running boats out of GI fishing MC. Saw him hookup Saturday morning. Called him on the radio around noon and he said they were still fighting it. Called him that evening and he said they were still fighting it. Called him Sunday morning and he said they were still fighting it. I told him I was heading in and good luck. Called him Sunday night and he was being towed in cause he ran out of fuel. I asked him if he ever caught the fish and he said yes, and no. They finally got close to the fish and it was a whale shark snagged in the back. The whale shark never even seemed to notice it was hooked. Lol.

When I was a kid, we were catfishing on the Ouachita just north of the Hangout, near Bastrop. Dad, LSUCouyon, hooked a monster. He fought it for several minutes, a couple of boats had stopped to see how big it was. Turned out to be about a 20lb buffalo.

Even more heartbreaking...
Have a perfectly executed plan work, hook up with a monster, and the hook comes out, line fails, or wraps in structure.

Have you eaten one before?

I am. Dont throw a choupique away in front of me. We would never be fishing buddies.

Yes. It was edible but absolutely not worth keeping and dealing with. Y'all saying that it's better than bass or sacaulait are just trying too hard to be coonasses. That shite ain't good unless you put enough shite with it to not be able to taste it.
Posted on 7/18/17 at 9:13 pm to DownshiftAndFloorIt
I'm not against at least trying it. Next time I'll throw one in the live well and fry it up fresh.

I put choupique right under sacalait and bass isnt even on the same level. Bream is much better than bass by a large margin. It isnt about being a coonass. Whoever cooked it for you, shouldnt be cooking it in the first place. I dont try to hide the taste of it. That would be like putting ketchup on a steak. I dont make boullets with them either. Fried choupique is right under sacalait. As for a courtbouillon, I'll take choupique over catfish anyday and I love some good catfish.
Next time you catch one clean it and fillet it. Lightly season the fillets. Lightly butter the inside of a fillet and cover it with onions, bell peppers and garlic. Now take the other fillet and cover that one. Sew the 2 fillets together with bakers twine and bake them or stick it a pot of courtbouillon to let simmer. Im telling you that shite is hard to beat.
