Splatoon 2: General Discussion and Review Thread

Straight up, one of the most unique and fun games out there. Anyone with a Switch should be looking into it, and if you like FPS's, it is highly recommended.

So yes, Splatoon 2 is more of the same. It's a lot more of the same, seeing how it folds in all the improvements and additions that were introduced to the original over time and gives returning maps a significant makeover. It's going to be a lot more of the same - with the potential for some new surprises - given how Splatoon 2 is going to benefit from the same steady roll-out of new weapons, maps and modes. By any reasonable measure, this is a better game than its predecessor, and not just on quantity alone. It no longer benefits from the shock of the new - for that, you have to look towards the outstanding Arms - but it's most definitely an improvement on what remains one of Nintendo's finest games in many a year. It was only inevitable, though, that this one was never going to feel quite as fresh.

The game encourages you to customise your character with new clothes, each of which gives you bonus abilities. I enjoyed playing around with different looks, settling on a cap that boosted the charge speed of my special attack and some trainers that made me run faster. All well and good, except for the fact that hats are in a different shop to shoes, which are separate from tops and legwear. Again, you have to quit to the menu every time, then go to a different store. If these gripes appear minor, that’s because they are. They came nowhere near ruining my time with Splatoon 2. It’s the most multiplayer fun I’ve had in a while: the bright colours and squelchy sounds draw you into a mechanically complex shooter that you could spend weeks trying to master – and still learn new tricks. Splatoon 2 doesn’t improve much on the excellent original, but it’s a timely reminder of just how fun it is to throw a bucket of paint at a man with a pointy head until he explodes.

Sounds like I'm glad I didn't play the first one.

Just downloaded this ridiculous iPhone app that Nintendo has pitched to use for in game chat. Can't wait to see how this works out.

Wario64 tweeted some faq's about it and apparently you can't use any other application on your phone while using their chat. So basically it hijacks your phone. It will open back up to your same chat room when you exit the other app, provided that game session is still going, but no texting or checking twitter while splatooning.

if it works at all like the parental controls work, color me intrigued and actually.. optimistic. I didn't think connecting my phone to my switch for Parental Controls would be as good as it was, and it's pretty awesome. Also with the mobile aspect of the Switch, and me always having my phone, it could be pretty awesome. We shall see though

Yeah the app sounds absolutely awful from all reports.
Completely dropped ball. Most likely because the Switch is just tapped out on Resources. But they still could have come up with another solution.

Nintendo has to be aware of the existence of discord, right? If you're going to make players use their phones, why design a more complicated and inferior version of that?
I'm rooting for Nintendo, regardless of my constant shitting on them, I promise. But it kills be that this is where they're at when it comes to the simple function of VC.

Yep. We all feel the same way. I spend dumb amounts of money on Amiibos and all new Nintendo products.
They make great games with awesome characters which all ages enjoy. The problem why we complain is always due to their hardware decisions and lack of support on the online side.

My new job is going to eventually require travel, so at some point I'll own a Switch, if only to play the number 4.

Odd part is I travel but with my 3DS and PS4, not the Switch. Really not a fan of playing it in handheld mode even though its awesome. Once I get a 2nd dock, i'll bring it back and fourth from home to work with me.

I held it in mobile form, and I had the same issue that I had with the Wii U tablet. Just don't like my hands being that far apart. I tried botw on the U for a bit, and I won't touch that system again without a pro controller.

Or maybe make an API and just focus on integrations.....? THAT would be something innovative.

I think everyone is. And if this were something between like minded consoles/experiences, say PS4 vs. Xbox, it's easy to say "Yeah that's stupid, I'll just buy the other console." That's impossible with nintendo, because I'm not getting Splatoon, Zelda, Mario on anything else.
This is the crux of the problem. As a fan, if you want to play Nintendo games, you have no choice. And I do think generally they have good intentions, they just let their arrogance show up far too often. I guess I'm a little more forgiving in general, and I still think they create experiences like no one else.
But man, dropping the Ball on VC is easily the biggest misstep yet, even though I generally hate random/public VC. Way worse than cloud saves, Virtual Console Delays, lack of media apps, etc.

Please post the diagram for voice chat set up with phone.
Posted on 7/19/17 at 12:38 pm to LSU Coyote
From a polygon article:
quote:
Voice chat is only active as long as the app is open. The smartphone in use also has to be unlocked and its screen on in order for voice chat to work. If you accidentally shut your phone’s screen off? Your conversation is over. Want to glance at a walkthrough really quickly? If you do, that means no more voice chat.

I know this is splatoon 2 thread, but last night my 6 year old beat the single player campaign of Splatoon 1. He was so dang hyped after he beat it bc he died a lot trying. I was there while he did and was giving out lots of high fives when he cheered after beating it.
The game was great for preparing him for twitch reaction skills and in general how FPS works..He can legit beat me when we play head to head and that is when I knew I was an old man .
/end thread hijack
