Houma Suggestions

I don't live in Houma, only go there occasionally for work. Tomorrow I'm going to have a new guy with me that I'm training. He wants some decent "Louisiana food". He specifically mentioned gumbo. It's been a while since I ate in Houma. Any suggestions? Someone told me The French Loaf is good for a poboy. Any truth to that? This will be for lunch, btw.
On a side note, I'll be taking him to Anthony's Thursday when I'm in Baton Rouge. He's never eaten a muffaletta, that's probably spelled wrong, in his life. I told him I'm gonna ruin him for all muffaletta's forever. Once again, probably misspelled. Lol

I like Griffins better than French Loaf. Fried bacon-wrapped shrimp poboy

Anthony's muffuletta is yak. The muffaletta is not a panini
Take him to Pocarellos
RE Houma, Big Als (though I think it closed)

Griffin's or big al's.
And get him Mr. Ronnies to take home with him.

If he wants gumbo the answer is A-Bears. The gumbo at Griffen's and Big Al's is nasty.

Spahr's has really good gumbo. Best in that vicinity, imo. Plus awesome bloody marys, great poboys, great catfish, other legit dishes

Thanks, I think I'm going to try A Bears since he specifically asked for gumbo.
And what's with all the Anthony's hate? Lol. I know it's not a traditional muffaletta, but it's damn good, whatever it is.

A-bears. Not sure what is still open there, but Big Als is just not that good, and almost everything else is a chain. A-Bears is lunch only and is the closest thing I've ever had to feeling like I was at some cajun grandma's house. Don't remember if they have the same menu everyday, or if it is just specials. But a piece of advice is to definitely get the chocolate peanut butter pie. I don't even like peanutbutter that much and I never get desert. But I always got that when working in Houma.
Just remembered one other option is Boudreaux and Thibodauxs. But I still pick A-Bears first.

Griffins for po-boys
1921 Seafood for boiled seafood and chargrilled oysters
A-Bears or Boudreaux and Thibodeaux's for Cajun dishes.

I ate there about a month ago on the way home from Cocodrie. I'm not from Louisiana so I'm no Cajun food expert, but I really enjoyed my meal there

If you there on a Wed or Friday TARC has the best gumbo in Houma. Another good one is Griffens. Off The Hook on St. Charles has a really good gumbo too. For one lunch and one lunch only in Houma I'd probably take him to A-Bears though. Only thing about the place is their service aint so great, its like you made a bet with your sibling that she lost and they have to serve you, she does it, but not because she wants too.
Other Good Places
Big Mikes, Best Barbeque in the area
Darceys Specialty Meats for Boudin, Gratons and Beef Jerky
Boudreaux and Thibodauxs has good lunch specials, I normally get a hamburger steak there.
Bayou Delight, for an old fashioned cajun meal
Chesters Cypress Inn for Fried food
Mr. Poboy for PoBoys
TARC if you on the east side
Redfish Pizza for a Calzone

Take a short ride up Bayou Black Dr to Bayou Delight. Every time I'm in the place, several priests are lunching there. Priests usually find good food, in my experience.

Whoops. Didn't know that.

Its supposed to be reopening as 5 Knives if it hasn't already. A combination of Spahrs and Alumni Grill.

Best cajun food around. I agree that TARC has the best gumbo. Gotta go to Big Mikes at least once.

Honestly still my favorite BBQ place even after moving to Houston and being told everywhere here is great.

Redfish was my favorite pizza in the Houma area by far. I have no idea how it operates as it's always empty. But the pizza is made just how I like it.

We went to A Bear's. It was real good. He loved the gumbo. I didn't have any, but it looked damn good. Had the catfish ABear. Fried catfish with some kind of crab sauce on it. I would definitely go back again, and will leave room for dessert. The pies they were rolling out looked legit. Thanks again!

I don't either, I think business picked up a little better after Holywood RD construction was complete. I've never been in there when they had more than 20 people or so. It's cheap too, My family of 4 gets a Calzone, a Med Pizza, Salad and cheesy bread for under $40 and we normally bring a little something home.
