Excluding Tolkien, what are some books geared more towards young kids? Good stories without too much blood and sex that I could read to them?

They are only 6 & 8, but I started reading them some Greek myths this weekend, and they really liked that. The Hobbit will be next. But after that, any ideas?

Harry Potter
Chronicles of Narnia
Chronicles of Prydain
Percy Jackson

I'm always torn at that age and reading these to them out loud, because I'd also love for them to read them on their own when they get a little older. We read the entire Harry Potter as a family, though, and it was great.

This is an awesome trilogy.

The main character breaks the 4th wall and is hilarious.

Its about magicians who summon genies to do their bidding and help them, but if they mess up the process the genie can break free and wreck shop.

I'm actually about to re-read it.

If they are into Disney, and what kids aren't, The Kingdom Keepers series might interest them. My niece loved them

Many good ones have already been mentioned.

I'll add Roverandom by Tolkien

and the Taran series (the book of three, black cauldron, castle of Llyr, taran wanderer, the high king) by Lloyd Alexander
