One of the few things I dislike more than government collecting money (taxes) and handing out money (welfare) is government telling people what they should eat and drink.

Since the gov is collecting and redistributing the funds then I have 0 problem with the gov telling recipients what they can and can't purchase with those funds.

I'm actually on the opposite view here. If you're going to live off the government dime you give up your freedom to choose to eat junk food. Odds of you being able to pay for the health problems you develop are pretty slim if you can't afford food.

People who work and can afford to buy their own food are free to eat whatever they want.

When you choose to get your food funds from taxpayers, you forego your purchasing rights.

Here not so much. If you have your hand out and are taking tax payer funded assistance than the government should absolutely be able to dictate what you buy. Welfare should not be made into a lifestyle it is not made to be comfortable. It is there for people who fall off their feet temporarily and are working to get back up. In the case of EBT yes the government should absolutely be able to dictate what a recipient buys.

The government is not telling them that. The government is telling them to use their own money to make those purchases. Like they always do (run the Louisiana Purchase card first, then pull out the wad of cash for their alcohol and cigarettes).

They have an option: don't buy certain food/beverages or don't take the free government money.
