I retired at 57 and have been retired for almost one year. So far it has been great. Lots of fishing, yard work and grandchildren keep me real busy.

I know it's near impossible for most people to imagine and I truly feel bad for those who have to work a job they really don't like for 30 years just to retire after they're worn down but there are those of us who really do love what we do for a living and look forward to doing it as long as we possibly can.
Crazy, huh?

Good advice. You need to find the right balance. The big change is that you no longer have to plan around work.

Year 3 of retirement and still getting better. I encourage folks to reevaluate their priorities and needs. The sooner you can do it the better. Get off the materialism merry-go-round and enjoy life over accumulating more things. You can get more money but you cannot get more time. I moved out of the US for life on a tropical beach. What surprised me the most is how much being away from the fray of US culture is relaxing and refreshing.

How do you like retirement?
Best job I've ever had. Best part - there are no more Monday mornings.

Is it what you expected?
Yes.

How do you fill your day?
By doing retirement stuff. Some days I stay busy, some days I don't do a damn thing.

Was it so boring you decided to go back to work
Never. After working for the same company for 42 years and sleeping in a hotel bed every other night for 28 of those 42 years, doubling my salary wouldn't be temptation enough to make me go back.

I'm liking all these posts.
Has anyone finished their bucket lists? I would truly enjoy visiting all SEC football stadiums in my lifetime. Been to four* so far. (*I'm counting TWLOCP in Jax for the FL/GA game).

Which beach/country? Only issue I'd anticipate with that would be access to grandkids.

And healthcare in a foreign country as you age and require more of it

I'll never understand this mindset.

Me neither. Hell, if you want to keep working every day why do it for free when you can get paid to do it?

That's true in some places but for sure something to take into account.
And with no medicare or insurance even if cheaper you'll be paying for everything out of pocket
I'd more lean toward a place on the beach in another country to spend 3-4 months a year at while remaining a resident of the US

Yep, I have a coworker who retired at 60, she still works part time while collecting a pension. She's capped at 29 hours a week, but also does a home business rehabbing garage sell treasures. She makes good money doing that.

Retired for 3 years. Didn't think
I would like it and,at first, it was tough but that only lasted about 6 months. Have a place on the beach and one in New Orleans. Travel when I want. Do what I want when I want. The key is to stay healthy and enjoy every day. My wife died about 8 years ago so I spend my money on good food, good wine and good sex.

My dad retired about 5 years ago and doesn't do a damn thing and sadly, he is not very sharp like he used to be. He goes to Vegas a few times a year and between trips he's very helping with our kiddos (sports, watching them so we can have date night, etc). My step mom does yoga twice a week, takes an annual trip with her girlfriends to New England, has hobbies and gets out of the house.... she hasn't missed a beat.
Gonna be interesting to see what they are up to in 5 years from now.

Finishing my 6th year at retirement, it is more than I could have hoped for. I liked most of the things I did in my working life, but even if you are the CEO of a corporation, or own a business, your time is not your own, whether customers, or stock holders, someone else dictates what you are going to do. I have been offered some great jobs since retiring, but every day I wake up is a day I won't get to live over again, and money is not reason enough to let someone else decide how I should live it.
