Wanted to add ... there is a "newcomer" on the market ...

Sentinel. Prevents Heartworm, fleas and internal parasites. Similar to Trifexis.

Right now, it is MUCH CHEAPER (not sure how long this will last) than Trifexis.

You can get a 6 month supply of Sentinel for $42 shipped to your door at KV Supply.

I recently moved my Doberman from Trifexis over to Senitel. Haven't seen one flea and she digested it very well.

Vet here.
Heartgard is crap now-a-days. There has been much resistance to ivermectin (which is the ingredient in Heartgard), especially in the South where mosquitoes are prevalent and the ingredient Ivermectin has been around forever.
There are much safer products these days .

Trifexis is the best for heartworms, intestinal worms, and flea control combined. Plus it is much cheaper than doing the Proheart 6 injection combined with a separate flea/tick preventative.

If you are not concerned about fleas, the Proheart 6 injection is the way to go. Covers heartworms and intestinal worms.

Sentinel

Sentinel is terrible for flea control. It is a growth inhibitor meaning it prevents certain stages of fleas. It WILL NOT kill adult fleas. So if your animal is in an environment where fleas jumping onto your animals, Sentinel will not do the job.

Posted by Pop on 6/28/17 at 4:38 pm to creolechef I would recommend Proheat 6, the 6 month shot for heartworms and Bravecto, the 3 month pill for fleas. Not the cheapest route but much less chance for missed doses. Drug Co. research shows that of people that claim to give monthly doses always on time have a purchase history of only 9 a year. You don't want to mess with heartworms.

This is my regiment. Bravecto and pro heart. Bravecto is advertised to work for three months, but it lasts for 6 months. I have 5 dogs.

Anyone have a good experience with the Soresto collars? Would that be a good option combined with a heartworm pill or injection?

If the dog has fleas/ticks already, then Bravecto is a new medication on the market. Fewer doses, longer duration.

Heartgard for HW treatment.

Nexgard for flea and tick prevention.
