sidenote: we should legalize, tax, and educate/rehabilitate

A large number of those are on legal, taxed prescription drugs. If you are advocating legalizing drugs like heroin and allowing unrestricted access to prescription drugs, I suspect that would negatively affect the situation. If you are advocating regulating currently illegal drugs when legalized, you're still in the same boat with a slightly bigger menu to choose from.

educate/rehabilitate
We've been trying that for decades now, to little avail. As much as people ridiculed it, the just say no campaign coincided with a statistical decrease in drug related incidents and the cessation of the program coincided with an upward trend in drug incidents. I'm not sure if that program was really the trigger but it targeted younger folks (kids specifically), attempting to head off drug use beforehand as opposed to trying to deal with after exposure.

I can assure you that if you talk to any DEA, Border Patrol, or Customs agent, they'l pretty much all tell you that not only are we losing the war, but that it's an unwinable one as well. People want to get high and will do whatever it takes to do it.

We are losing the war....but it is winnable.

We just haven't figured out the right strategy to do so.

We haven't found the right balance between enforcement/punishment, rehabilitation and treatment, and education.

Plus without a secure border we are spinning our wheels.

I think that part where you cook something into a liquid, draw it up into a syringe, then inject into your body makes me feel less sorry for them.
You gotta really want to do heroin.

It's not like a teenager huffing freon from an air conditioner out of a garbage bag and dying.

You'll never win a "war on drugs".

You have to accept their presence and deal with them like we deal with everything else. Hell, teen smoking is at it's all time lowest point in history despite the fact that cigarettes weren't outlawed.

Fentanyl.....

Because fentanyl is so much more powerful than heroin, there's a greater chance of overdose if officers get some powder on their skin during field tests. Others can also be affected if officers get powder on their uniforms.

Earlier this month federal officials warned local police across the country to take added precautions when contact with fentanyl is possible.

Accidental contact with a quantity equivalent to five or six grains of table salt can be deadly if inhaled or absorbed through skin abrasions, U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration chief Chuck Rosenberg said when the new warnings were

To think Congress had to step in and get involved when they jacked the prices of Narcan up %400.

What about your neighbor's son or your niece who tries heroin for the first time due to peer pressure and drops dead?

I cannot say I'm sorry enough, sincerely. If it's not too hard, could you share a little about your son he was and how it started? I'm a father of a 15 YO. Knowing how to be vigilant about this may help many here.

I can't. Too raw. Hug 'em. Love 'em. Make them work for everything they want.

I have no advice. I won't take the blame for his choices. Nor can I can take credit for our daughter's Phd and her choices.

My brother is an addict. I have no sympathy for anyone who takes something that they cannot verify what it is. Kids today are exposed to more information than at anytime in history.

They all know that if you take drugs, then overdosing is a distinct possibility.

Drug addicts are the scourge of the Earth.

secure border

I'm conservative but even I know that securing the border won't solve anything or even slow down the smuggling rate. Smugglers will find any means to get the shite on our streets just as an addict will find any means to get high.

BP seizing 100 lbs of weed at the border is about like a NOLA cop seizing an 8th. Almost not even worth their time.
