it really isnt as dangerous as some people make it out to be - unless you choose to take risks beyond your capabilities. what is seldom reported with accidents is how experienced the diver is/was or even if he/she was certified.
i know several guys that have spear fished that never went to a SCUBA class. thats just stupid.

I think this is where most people fail at. I'm not going in if the current is crazy. No fish is worth it. Also alot of people under estimate the power of a fish and will chase. Its as dangerous as you make it.

On the other hand, I have a friend who was a certified diving instructor and died while diving recreationally. A momentary lapse can be deadly, so it is really dangerous, it just requires training AND diligence.
