I always carried a inflatable safety tube thing, think they called them a "safety sausage", it was normally rolled up, but was about 5 feet long and 5 inches in diameter when you blew it up. Was bright safety green, you held it up over your head vertically, made it much easier for the boat to spot you even when there was some chop. They were required by some of the dive boat operators, like the one that went out to the Flower Gardens reef back then.
