The Irish Channel Project developed from our desire to learn more about Geographic Information Systems (GIS) while working on our master's degrees in History at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The Channel provided an intersection in our varying interests in Irish, religious, and ethnic histories, as well as a manageably sized study area.

The Irish Channel was once part of the city of Lafayette (not to be confused with modern day Lafayette, LA) and was officially incorporated into the city of New Orleans in the 1840s. One thing about the Channel which may surprise you? It really was never all that Irish. While the term "Irish Channel" came about in the later decades of the 19th century (around the time of our map, in fact), the modern Channel was actually home to people from all over the world, with a large population of German, French, English, and, of course, Irish immigrants. The Channel itself seems to have been first and foremost an immigrant community with a large population of European

Didn't even realize they had interactive maps in 1880. So, yeah, very cool.

Believe it or not, the Channel has improved a good amount since Katrina

I love the old stuff and nostalgia in general, but that's one ugly arse building tbh.

Just remind them the statues have been removed so it's now safe

Yeah, I was kidding.
Was thinking of moving to New Orleans a couple years ago. House pricing in the channel is ridiculous.

Understatement. Using the term "Irish Channel" when describing something like shoes or a bike meant that item was trashy.

Three Irish mofos with a crap ton of children used to live in the building where I rented an apartment off Mag.
Now you can't turn around without being run over by a "vintage" bicycle or trip over some ironic guy with well manicured facial hair and black square glasses frames, even though he might not even need to wear glasses. Miss that neighborhood in its early Post-K days circa 2007-2009. Was fun before the generic hipster invasion. Mostly yats, gun hippies, some yuppie types, and fun (non activist) college kids.
