NBA Players give Jerry West more or the same level of admiration as they give Bill Russell

And you'd think it was Jerry West that went 11-1 (Russells record) and not 1-9 in the finals. They stop and intently listens to everyone of his words, and they some how ignore that he came up short more often than not.
The players don't give two shits about these finals records...or at least to the extent the media and the pundits do.
Lebron is the player of our generation, a top 3 player of all time, and will likely go down as the 2nd best or best player of time.
Enjoy his greatest, because the players do.

West is probably one of the 5 greatest figures in nba history. Yes he was an incredible player... And the fricking logo... But his accomplishments post career put him on the level of Auerbach as probably the two greatest GMs ever.
He is to be revered and he had a large part in building the Warriors as they are now.
West is NBA royalty along the likes of Bird, Russell, Magic, MJ, and Auerbach.
These guys are the pillars of the league.. without which it probably wouldn't exist.

And won finals MVP in one of tbe finals losses..and he had Wilt!
I don't know if people realize just how incredible the Celtics were... They absolutely trucked a many Hall of famers including some of the greatest ever.

Jerry West was mostly always awesome in the Finals.
He won Finals MVP on a losing team.
Jerry West lost a lot of Finals but he never failed to show up.

West was 32% from the field (38 for 117) in his teams only Finals win in 1972. West still pouts about the fact that his individual performance was terrible that series.
Wilt was awesome & the finals MVP & Gail Goodrich scored 25 ppg on 46% shooting .
Walt Frazier also demoralized West in 1970 Game 7( Willis Reed game) dragging him for 36/19/7/5 .

West should not be mentioned in the same sentence as the great Red Auerbach.
Auerbach is most certainly a better Coach (9 titles) while Jerry West was a failed Coach demoted to Scouting.
The myth of West as an Excecutive is based on the myth that he built Showtime when in fact it was Bill Sharman who called the shots until 1989.
Sharman oversaw the deal that got the 79 #1 pick( Magic ). Sharman made the trade to get the the 82 #1 pick (Worthy) and hired Pat Riley .
If Jerry West called the shots there would be no Showtime as he did not want Magic Johnson & was pushing ownership to take Sydney Moncrief.
Comparing West to Auerbach is absurd.

Serious question: When did if a team won the NBA finals or not become something you can pin on a player, despite his performance in the series?
And how far down the depth chart does it go?
Does Luc Longley get credit for the Bulls championship teams?
Does Bill Wennington?
I mean, I never thought of Magic Johnson's record in NBA Finals, I just knew he was a key part of some championship Laker teams and a key part of some Laker teams that lost in the finals.
I just want to know the new rules.

Nothing to think about because Magic teams mostly won & was 5-4 in Finals appearances ( 3 MVP's) while Wests teams were 1-9 & he played like a dog in the only team win.
Get the "rules" from those bashing LeBron for being 3-5
