I thought this was all ridiculous until I saw the video... I get it a little more now.

On the contrary, her staging of that was intentional. Publicly proclaiming a mea culpa for your white privilege is a hot trend among the upper class progressives. It's moral preening, and while it might earn snide remarks from some, it gets them kudos from their social circles.
