I'm thinking about taking advantage of Southwest's 3 day sale and looking at some different destinations.

Part of me sees the Bahamas and says "Hey - the Bahamas."

Part of me looks at Nassau on Google Maps images and says "Hey - that looks like Tijuana, but on an island."

So what's the deal?

Assume that I would be staying in downtown Nassau at the Hilton.

Wouldn't waste your time on Nassau but you can get a $150-$200 r/t flight to some amazing outter islands from there. Exuma and Eleuthera are great islands.

Atlantis is about all I can recommend in Nassau, but I highly recommend it. Just be prepared to spend some coin.

Nassau was terrible. Downtown was full of junk tourist shops and cheesy restaurants/bars that cater to the cruise crowds. The island was run down and locals weren't very friendly. I'd go somewhere else.

Didn't go to Atlantis so can't comment on it.

If you go book your dives or snorkeling out of Stuart Coves Dive Bahamas. Fantastic dive company.

If you are saving money on flights, look at The One And Only resort. It is the only place I'd stay. I'd visit Atlantis and the conch shacks. Otherwise, there's no reason to leave the resort. It is very nice.

I liked Nassau. It's certainly not wealthy by any means, and shite is way too expensive, but the people are cool and the food is really good if you know where to look.

Stay at Graycliff. It has the best wine cellar in the world (for like 8 years in a row), it has a cigar shop, chocolate shop, creamery, bar, Brazilian steakhouse, beautiful gardens, and a pool all on isolated, lush grounds. It's crazy how much green space is behind that hotel considering the size, and it's all walled in by trees and plant life. Downtown and all the shops and restaurants by the cruise terminal are an easy walk. I also like The Towne Hotel, but it's "roughing it" by American standards. It's a cool little vibe and place. Also very cheap to stay at.

I just got back about a month ago from staying at Atlantis. I had free room and board and everything was still soooo damn expensive. The hotel and facilities are incredible, but it puts a big dent in the checkbook.

quote:

"Hey - that looks like Tijuana, but on an island."

They have laws that do not allow the tear down of old buildings in certain districts. They require new owners and business to rehabilitate instead of build new, so it leaves lots of old, abandoned structures. I thought that was crazy, but it's by design.
