Looking for a gas straight shaft trimmer for the house. Want something with power and durability. Probably the 200-250 range. What ya got?

Home Depot has the SRM-225 on sale for $199 right now, that is what i use in my biz, but most here have had good service out of both brands. Only mistake you could make with either is running corn gas in it.

Been very happy with my Stihl. Going on 6-7 years with no problems. For reference on useage I was killing a Craftsman yearly before the Stihl.

That's about where I'm at. My current one I'll be replacing is a 3 yr old Craftsman "Professional". Hoping I can get past 5 yrs with something.

The Echo SRM-225 will last an awful long time and I would recommend using this in it for fuel

I don't have experience with the Echo, but I would buy a Stihl again in a heartbeat. I currently have two (straight and flex shafts) and couldn't be happier.

You sure about 40:1? I've mostly only seen 50:1 recommended.

50:1 for Echo. 40:1 is for Poulans, etc.

Stuff is expensive as hell. Just get a good gas can and buy non ethanol

Yeah, I saw they echo didn't even make a 40:1 in their fuel. I just wanted to make sure the guy wasn't going to go buy the wrong stuff because of a photo.
+1 on trufuel. It's expensive, but for regular yard maintenance it's a blessing. NEVER having to worry about fuel issues on any of my small engines is worth it.

Either will last years with good service, your maintenance habits will determine how long they last more than anything else.

Yes on the 40:1, the 50:1 was brought about by the EPA back years ago. I run all my air cooled equipment at that and my race saws are run at 32:1 or lower.
I've never had an engine failure due to oil ratios

I always mix my gas somewhere around 38:1-40:1 for my two stroke equipment that calls for 50:1.
Especially chainsaws which are run extremely hard compared to most other two strokes.

This. My stihl equipment has never had a hiccup after several years, just using NonE gas.

E10 really isn't a problem with the newer stuff either unless you let it sit up for a long time. Both of my saws have had mostly E10 ran through them and it took 8 years for one to need carb work and 5 years for the other. Both sat up for about 6 months and both crapped at the same time with the same problem.

Yes it is expensive if you were burning 5-10 gallons a year but a typical homeowner will not burn a gallon a year so in reality at $20 per gallon it's really not that high

Running corn free is a no brainer for sure, but i would recommend you add a cleaner such as Seafoam, 2 stroke trimmers and blowers tend to carbon up over time.

All off my yard equipment is either Stihl or Echo. I used to be entirely Stihl until my chainsaw broke down and I borrowed a neighbors Echo. After that incident I have bought all Echo yard equipment.
I just go done trimming limbs with my Stihl chainsaw and it was a bitch to start. Of course I ended up flooding it, so I had to remove the sparkplug and pull the starter rope a couple times. After that it started up. I never have issues like that with my Echo products. I am thinking of getting a larger chainsaw and it will definitely be an Echo.
