The history of the “The Volunteer State” began with the War of 1812 when Gen. Andrew Jackson led more than 1,500 soldiers from his home state to fight for the United States at the Battle of New Orleans.

The name truly took hold during the Mexican-American war when President James K. Polk, another native son, made an appeal for 2,600 nationwide volunteers at the beginning of the conflict that resulted in more than 30,000 soldiers from his home state alone.

AMHERST, Mass. -- A University of Massachusetts student ended his hunger-strike over the school's Minuteman log by eating pizza with his mother and the university chancellor.

The university said Friday that junior Martin Jones, 24, ended his four-day fast Thursday night.

Jones called an end to his protest after receiving assurances from the Chancellor David Scott that a formal discussion about the issue would take place.

A group of students began protesting the logo last week, saying the colonial militiaman was racist, sexist and promoted violence. Last Friday, after many students and alumni reacted angrily to the proposed change, Scott said the mascot would remain and said no discussions could take place until things cooled down on the campus.

The symbol, taken from the colonial militiamen who battled the British at Lexington and Concord, was adopted in 1972 after students protested the previous knickname, the Redmen.
