like someone in Asia claiming to be descended from Genghis Khan: there's a decent chance of it being true.

A huge proportion of people in western Asia are descended from GK. I recall a number on the order of 30%, but that seems too high. I know it was a huge proportion.

quote:

An international group of geneticists studying Y-chromosome data have found that nearly 8 percent of the men living in the region of the former Mongol empire carry y-chromosomes that are nearly identical. That translates to 0.5 percent of the male population in the world, or roughly 16 million descendants living today.

Add another 8% for women would would have the same parentage = 16%

/\ DUMBEST THING I HAVE EVER POSTED /\

I will wear my dunce cap for the rest of the week.

It looks like the estimates are around 8% of males in certain regions of Asia. But I find it crazier that 0.5% of all males WORLDWIDE are decendants.

Descent from Genghis Khan
quote:

Zerjal et al. (2003)[7] identified a Y-chromosomal lineage present in about 8% of the men in a large region of Asia (about 0.5% of the world total).
Now I'm going to listen to some Hardcore History since this got me in the mood.

It would still be ~ 8% since the denominator (the population) also doubled.
