Just moved into a new home where the owner had an invisible fence. She took the control box and collars but left the wiring in place. My local invisible fence dealer wants $1k to come and install a new box and flag the yard, (including collar). My question is, are all the control boxes pretty much universal? Can I just buy a different brand box and collar off the internet or are some systems wired differently?

they all pretty much use a single buried wire. Plug and play with a new box.

1K, tell them to get lost.

Wire is wire and all those systems use the same wire. Just buy the power box/collar. You can make or buy the flags to train your dog.

Just get you a collar and box. Steal the flags from a construction site.

You can get a used control box on ebay for $20-30. Buy a new collar for $65. Plug them up and rock and roll. Make sure collar and box are compatible. I have a petsafe system. Most boxes work for a multitude of collars.

When you plug the box up, it will tell you if there is a break in the line. If so, I'd run a new line rather than dig up the whole yard finding the break. Rent a trencher from Home Depot. Much better than a weedeater or edger, and does a better job. Buy 18 gauge stranded copper wire. Don't buy the stuff that says "dog fence", as it's 40% more $.

I fenced off my 3 acres for less than $400, that includes wire, collar, control box, and trencher rental. Been in place for over a year without a hiccup other than replacing batteries in the collar.

I have a Dog Watch hidden fence system I would be glad to give you that I no longer use. I dont have the collars anymore but you could get new collars. Put up an email address if interested. Also, I work in Bham a couple days a week so I could deliver locally.

They wanted $1500 to do my yard. I bought a pet safe unit from tractor supply. If wires are already run that is the hard part...

We have a Petsafe wireless that works well. I'm not sure how the range compares to others.

Fuggituhboutit - the buried wire that is. Get a wireless Pet Safe system with the shock collar. $300 and set the circle radius on it up to 90 feet (180 ft diameter). Just change batteries a occasionally on the collar.
