Yeah, I saw it.
Talked about his personal relationship w Hinch as a host to him on recruiting trip to Stanford, a teammate w him on the A's and then later was his coach w the Diamondbacks. So, when he said how much he has improved from his first job, where he essentially had to cut his teeth, to making great moves night in and night out, I took it w a grain of salt.
Smoltz, however, added some important knowledge. He said Hinch has learned the error in his ways and is finding balance b/w the analytical side and having good old fashioned baseball players in the clubhouse. I believe that.
Hinch has been progressively better in handling the pitching. I would like to see him advance runners more often, whether attempting SB's or bunting for a base hit w the SAC as a secondary outcome, or even just encouraging hitters to hit situationally.
Regardless, it was nice to hear Smoltz say that there is/was an awareness to play for more than 3 outcomes and some acknowledgement from the brass of the Astros that changes were necessary in addition to personnel.

This was the only thing that I raised my eyebrows at. I agree with everything they said about Hinch and the front office recognizing a need to deviate from pure analytics to building a solid team with those "guys" that just make you better by being a part of the team day in and day out. Read by me as McCann and Beltran.

Hinch is evolving just like everyone in the organization. Young players are growing. Luhnow seems to be more patient with his moves but also has made much better acquisitions recently. I think we're moving in a good direction

This has nothing to do with Hinch IMO because he isn't the GM.
I also don't think they signed/traded for guys like Carter, Valbuena, Rasmus etc with the expectation they would be key pieces on a championship team. They were low risk high reward moves because of where the team was at when they made them. Once the building blocks that came up through the system as part of the rebuild proved they were ready (Springer, Correa, McCullers, Bregman) they went out and spent the money to get the veteran pieces to compliment them
