To anyone who's played The Division

Bought it when it first came out, but put it away b/c there were too many glitches....but now I started playing again, and am up to level 21. Question: how useful is having a shotgun as one of your weapons? So far, I've gotten by without using it yet...but now that I've gotten deeper into the game, some of these "boss" characters are getting tougher to take down. Apparently the shotgun yields a shite-ton of damage, but I imagine I'd have to practically get in his face to use it, for accuracy's sake. Is a shotgun the way to go, or are there other pointers someone can give me? Full disclosure: I'm not what you'd call a "master" at non-sports gaming, so apologies if my dilemma sounds stupid, lol...

Uhh I didn't think division was one of those games where it mattered what gun you used unless it was pvp

In campaign mode, I can usually take down the boss's lackeys without much trouble, but the boss himself has been a pain in the arse (in later levels, anyway). This one boss I'm currently struggling with, if I get too close, I may land a few shots, but then he'll unload his blowtorch on me. I'm not in front of the game right now, but I'm just curious if a shotgun will stun him enough where I could continuously fire at him 'til he wears down. If so, I guess I'll pull the trigger and buy one (they're not cheap, so I wanna make sure it's useful before purchasing)...it causes way more damage than the weapons I use, but again, I'm concerned about accuracy...

As a latex rubbber salesman, you should be able to afford it.

For the blowtorch guys, shoot the canisters on their backs to make them explode and do a ton of damage, then just shoot them and stay out of their range. I would not recommend using a close up shotgun against those type of enemies

I don't know which Cleaner boss you are talking about, but take out his lackey's first and then just keep your distance from the boss. Their flamethrowers have a good amount range, as already mentioned shoot his tank, that'll knock his health down quite a bit, just keep your distance, deploy a turrent (shock) to stun him for a short time and use that opportunity to bring his health down more.

To answer this particularly, it will not. A shotgun is useless against most cleaners as the flame will hurt your way faster than that shotgun on them.
Like the others said, keep distance, kill the rushers with bats and shields, shoot the tanks.

Appreciate the replies. I've seen those tanks explode before, so I don't know why it never occurred to my dumb arse to just aim for the tank right away, lol...that'd definitely level the playing field a bit. I still haven't really figured out the usefulness of owning a shotgun, and that was the only thing I could think of (using it in a boss battle). I dunno, maybe it's useful for blasting some rogue agent in the Dark Zone who's messing up your plans? Anyhow, thanks again for the replies...

If you're under lvl 30 gear doesn't matter a whole lot.

From a damage perspective? I dunno, maybe you're right...but for me anyway, some weapons are easier to handle than others, so if for no other reason, they're more useful b/c I'll hit the targets with more success.
What makes them more important after level 30? I haven't read up on the game elsewhere, so I honestly have no idea...

Gear will add attributes to your weapons and stuff. Damage boosts, talents, damage resistances, etc.... those attributes aren't on lower level gear and mods.

When I got to level 30 was the only time I used a shotgun. I mostly used it in underground missions.

I'm a level 17 right now. I normally use an assault rifle and a sniper type rifle. I just take too much damage from shots to get close enough with a shotgun, plus it is too slow to reload and doesn't hold enough shells. The drones are the biggest aids in the game so far.
But the bosses are too hard to kill. I was fighting one last night in an attack on a stronghold. He was a level 15. I got off two sets of drones on him and emptied my sniper rifle 3 times into him and he still had half a life remaining. I'm going to gear up and mix in more explosive rounds tonight. But it is tough..

I never like the shotgun because it meant you had to be real close to the characters trying to kill you. I usually used a sniper rifle and LMG or Assault rifle. Pick them off at distance then run in and clean up with the M60.

The M60 is pretty boss. Jumps like hell, but very effective..

Was he a big fat Riker?

No do not use a shotgun. Get a powerful rifle and tag his arse from a distance.
Use your perks and skills to hit him to limit ammo usage. Are you on the one in the mall? If so keep running up and down the levels and hit him as he is on the level above or below you.
FWIW the boss glitched and stopped chasing me after a few round of running from him.

Sometimes I have good luck if I can lure him to an area where I can climb a ladder and then start shooting at him from the rooftop. If he starts walking away, I'll climb down and bait him a little more, then climb back up. Sometimes it might take awhile to kill him, but it's better than respawning all the time, esp. if the nearest safe house is a long distance away...
Apparently it's pretty agreed upon not to use a shotgun, so I guess my instincts were right by never buying one...

At that level I used an M60 with a +114% size magazine. Re-Roll and get meticulous, if you can. Having 214 rounds, learning how to burst fire it and having a magazine that auto filled helped me live longer. Not much makes up for being able to throw down a lot of lead without having to reload. Reloading takes too much time and got me killed a lot.

I bumped my M60 up to 120ish rounds. How do you double it?
I killed the boss by staying on a roof and dropped every grenade I had on him. Also threw my drone on the roof ledge where he couldn't kick it. Live and learn..
