In case anyone cares, someone is 30 min away from breaking the 2 hour mark in the marathon... scientists have believed for hundreds of years that no one could come close. Fastest mark so far is a few seconds under 2:03...just crazy. Link is:

They're shielding him from the wind by creating a fake pack and a car with a huge sign on it.

I figured Kipchoge would blow trying to run that pace. Incredible. I think he could run 2:01:30 or so in Berlin in legit conditions.
It speaks to Kipchoge's greatness that the other two, who are great runners, completely bombed

I see he didn't make it, but even if he had, the greatest moment in running history will always be Roger Bannister breaking the 4 minute mile. For a lot of the reasons you mentioned in your OP. It was such a physical and mental barrier. Look how many people did it right after him.

The biggest moment in running history was Secretariat's blowout at the Belmont.
Number 2 was his move in the first turn of the Preakness
Number 3 was his explosion down the stretch of the Derby.

It takes me longer to drive a marathon in Houston traffic.
