HBO, fearing that viewers will search elsewhere to literally chase the dragon once Game of Throneswraps up in two seasons, has officially started developing a spinoff series. Or four. According to the Hollywood Reporter, “Each of the four projects will explore different time periods of Martin’s sprawling world of Westeros. It’s unclear where any of the four fall in the show’s universe — meaning they could be prequels, sequels or spinoffs.”

The writers involved are Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Carly Wray (The Leftovers), Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), and Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential AND A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master), the first two by themselves and the latter two with George R.R. Martin. We’ll have more on this story as it develops.

Have to assume at least 2 are prequels, 1 being the rebellion and 1 being about Bran the Builder for the original building of the Wall

They all are great stories. The Conquest. Dance of the Dragons. Dunk and Egg. Blackfyre Rebellion and the Great Bastards. Robert's Rebellion. Not a single one of those stories would be overindulging. There is enough material and it they are each bad arse in their own way.

While I would love to see Robert's Rebellion, we already know a ton of details about it. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see it on tv. But I kind of want to see something we don't know has much detail about. Like the First Men's war with the Children of the Forest, the first war with the White Walkers, or the Andal invasion.

So George will start writing two new spinoffs. This must mean he has finished the last two books and they'll be out soon.

I'd love to see the Dance with Dragons, the Blackfyre Rebellion, or perhaps even a Doom of Valyria/Century of Blood epic. All would be loaded with interesting characters in trying times.

1. Robert's Rebellion

3. Blackfire Rebellion
4. Dunk and Egg?

Dedicating a whole season to things like Robert's Rebellion then doing a completely different backstory the next season and so on could be good and do well.

But multi-season spinoffs of original material, while potentially decent, are misguided

There's no way HBO would have the budget to do a Dance with Dragons spinoff. They have to pick and choose as it is with when they use the dragons and direwolves. They couldn't even put Ghost in the Battle of the Bastards because they didn't have the budget for both Ghost and Wun Wun.

The more I think about it the more I'm not sure Aegon's Conquest would be that interesting to see on tv. It's just Aegon with Balerion the Black Dread burning shite and everyone bends the knee except Dorne of course.

Definitely want to see Robert's Rebellion, Blackfyre Rebellion, Dunk and Egg, War of the first men and children of the forest

Aegon's Conquest. Balerion would make Drogon look like a dragonfly.
