Fire a bunch of notable employees because your company is bleeding money, then hire a highly paid NBA insider. Seems like a smart move

I mean, it is. They fired a bunch of guys and then got the best guy out there.

It's not like firing all those people was going to have a massive difference on ESPN's bottom line. It is more of a message to shareholders that they're shifting course.

Agreed. This kind of hiring can't be good for the overall morale at ESPN. They just shite canned a ton of people ostensibly b/c they can't afford them. To turn around and hire one of the highest paid NBA guys around just days later is an extremely tone deaf move.

It might not come across as the best PR, but ESPN has to go all in on NBA coverage right now, and the Vertical/Woj has been the go to for a huge amount of NBA fans.
