Goldmans Bear Call has TSLA reeling today down 5% in first 45 minutes of trading.

What was the reference to the battery issue in the report?
Can't make enough or quality problems while making them?
Seems like it could be a bigger story, but I haven't heard anything about it.

The Goldman report I saw was referencing two issues:
Plateau of S Model Sales
Production Capability for Model 3

Think I saw where GS has a price target of $180?
Posted on 7/5/17 at 4:49 pm to TigeRoots
That is correct. Lowered earlier target from $190.

I sold in the 380's
I'm just watching from the sidelines now
I like the vision, but not the stock right now.

it’s less than expected, which Tesla attributed to a “severe production shortfall of 100 kWh battery packs.”
This is what gets me. They want to make 20k cars a month by December and cannot equip that many a qtr right now.

It would seem like other people have the same concerns right now. Under $310 today

the announcement of "all electric" by both France and Volvo probably playing a part in this
Posted on 7/6/17 at 5:24 pm to mb810
Obvious statement is that more competition is bad for Tesla.
The quality of competition matters here though. Volvo being a "luxury" car makers taking this route I think may mean more.

But the Model 3 is supposed to be the "cheap" alternative; Tesla no longer being limited to luxury cars. Tesla published all of their patents for batteries, etc. to spark the competition in the industry. You'd have to assume this strategic move means they'd welcome the company of other automakers, in the long run it just shifts public acceptance of electric vehicles. Makes me ponder the bearish response investors seem to be taking.

The valuation is more than GM and Ford. Even if they exceed all expectations is it realistic to think they will gain more market share with other companies switching to electric?
Seems way overvalued to me. I just don't see how the stock price will continue to climb. I can't see their profit margin being that much greater than GM/Ford

This is where their distinction as an "energy company" vs an automotive one comes into play. If they can develop tech that becomes the standard for not just auto-electric industry, but for battery technology overall, then who knows how high they could continue to climb.

But how would that be reflected in the tesla stock?
Do profits from battery sales go to tesla?
Are the gigafactories under the tesla umbrella?

I think the Tesla umbrella is everything energy related and includes it's auto manufacturing. Reflected in the stock if something like the home solar roofing takes off, or their battery tech is sold to a budding alternative energy market

Well their solar roof thing is falling behind schedule now.
Musk continues to come with hold ideas, but getting them off the ground and becoming profitable is still the billion dollar question.

Anybody buying on the dip or do we consider this a more realistic value? I'm looking to buy and hold.

Does anyone agree with me now that TSLA is a speculative stock?
